Labour’s Telethon: €1.8M for Maltese Causes
Labour’s Telethon: A Record €1.8M for Maltese Causes
Imagine this: a single night, a thousand calls, and €1.8 million raised. That’s the power of Labour’s annual telethon, which once again set a new record this year. But what does this mean for Malta and its causes? Let’s look the numbers, the stories, and the impact of this fundraising phenomenon.
€1.8M in 12 Hours: A Telethon Record
The 14th edition of Labour’s telethon was a resounding success, with a staggering €1,837,671 raised in just 12 hours. This year’s event, held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, saw a flurry of calls and donations pouring in from across Malta and Gozo. The telethon, which started at 6 PM sharp, was a testament to the Maltese people’s generosity and commitment to supporting local causes.
“We’re absolutely overwhelmed by the response,” said Labour Party Secretary General, Clyde Caruana. “This is more than just a fundraiser; it’s a reflection of Malta’s spirit of community and solidarity.”
Causes Close to Home
The telethon’s success lies in its ability to connect with Maltese people on a personal level. This year, 27 causes benefited from the fundraising, ranging from healthcare and education to social welfare and environmental initiatives. Here are a few stories that capture the spirit of the telethon:
- Id-Dar tal-Providenza: The residential home for the elderly received €150,000, which will go towards the upkeep and improvement of its facilities. “This donation will make a real difference to the lives of our residents,” said Sister Monica, the home’s superior.
- Ewropejbha: This NGO, which supports individuals with learning difficulties, received €100,000. The funds will go towards setting up a new centre in Msida, providing more people with access to vital services.
- Din l-Art Ħelwa: The organisation, which works to preserve Malta’s built heritage, received €50,000. This will contribute to the restoration of historic buildings like the Old University Building in Valletta.
More Than Just Money
The telethon’s impact extends beyond the money raised. It’s a platform that amplifies the voices of Malta’s NGOs, raising awareness about their causes and the challenges they face. It’s a symbol of unity, bringing together people from all walks of life in support of a common goal. And it’s a testament to the power of collective action, showing what can be achieved when a community comes together.
As the telethon’s final total was announced, Prime Minister Robert Abela summed it up: “Tonight, we’ve shown once again that when we stand together, there’s no limit to what we can achieve. This is what makes Malta truly special.”
So, what’s next for the telethon? Labour has already started planning for next year’s event, aiming to build on this year’s success and continue supporting Malta’s causes. As for the rest of us, it’s a reminder to keep that spirit of community and solidarity alive, all year round.
