Labour’s Telethon Smashes Records, Raising €1.8m for Charity

Imagine this: a bustling Republic Street in Valletta, filled with the hum of chatter and the clink of coins dropping into collection buckets. This was the scene last Saturday night as Labour Party supporters gathered for the annual telethon, an event that has become a staple in Malta’s political and charitable calendar.

Breaking Records, One Euro at a Time

The telethon, held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, raised a staggering €1.8 million, smashing last year’s record by a cool €200,000. The funds will be distributed among various local charities, providing much-needed support to vulnerable communities across Malta and Gozo.

But how did they do it? The secret, according to Labour Party Secretary Clint Camilleri, lies in the power of community. “It’s about people coming together, giving what they can, and knowing that every euro makes a difference,” he said.

From Valletta to Zebbug, a Show of Solidarity

From the historic streets of Valletta to the quiet lanes of Zebbug, Maltese people opened their hearts and their wallets. Donations poured in from all corners of the islands, a testament to the telethon’s enduring appeal and the generosity of the Maltese people.

Among the donors was 75-year-old Maria from Żebbuġ, who has been contributing to the telethon since its inception. “I may not have much,” she said, “but I know that every little bit helps. It’s our duty to give back to those in need.”

More Than Just Fundraising

The telethon is more than just a fundraising event. It’s a showcase of Malta’s cultural diversity, with performances by local artists, traditional dance groups, and even a few surprise appearances by political heavyweights.

This year’s event was no different. The stage at the MCC played host to a medley of talent, from the soulful strains of Glen Vella to the traditional folk music of the Għana group. In between acts, Labour Party leaders took to the stage, appealing to the audience’s generosity and thanking them for their support.

As the night drew to a close, Prime Minister Robert Abela took to the stage, his voice hoarse from hours of cheering and clapping. “Tonight,” he said, “we have shown once again that when we stand together, there’s no challenge we can’t overcome. And we’ve raised an incredible €1.8 million to boot!”

So, what’s next for the telethon? With records broken and hearts warmed, the Labour Party is already to next year’s event. But for now, it’s time to celebrate a job well done. As Clint Camilleri put it, “We’ve shown that when it comes to helping our fellow Maltese, there’s no limit to what we can achieve.”
