Malta & Gozo’s Week in the Sun: May 18-24, 2026
As the Mediterranean sun begins to peak over the ancient walls of Mdina, Malta’s cultural calendar is already buzzing with activity. From art exhibitions in Valletta’s grand palazzos to traditional feasts in Gozo’s quaint villages, here’s your guide to what’s on this week.
Art in the City: Valletta’s Newest Exhibitions
Kicking off our week is the grand opening of ‘Malta: Land of Sea and Sun’ at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta. This exhibition, curated by local artist and professor, Dr. Joseph Farrugia, showcases the island’s rich maritime history through a unique blend of art and artifacts. The opening night, on May 18, promises to be a star-studded affair with the who’s who of Maltese art and culture in attendance.
Just a stone’s throw away, the historic Casa Rocca Piccola is hosting ‘The Art of Resilience’, an exhibition by Maltese photographer, Mario Mizzi. Mizzi’s powerful black and white images capture the spirit of Malta’s resilience, from the Great Siege to modern-day challenges. The exhibition runs until June 15, but the opening night on May 19 is a must for photography enthusiasts.
Feast Days and Folklore in Gozo
Across the channel, Gozo is gearing up for its annual feast of St. Mary of Jesus, celebrated in the village of Xewkija on May 21. The week-long festivities culminate in a grand procession, with the statue of the saint paraded through the streets, accompanied by marching bands and traditional Gozitan folklore. The evening ends with a spectacular fireworks display, lighting up the skies over the Azure Window – or what’s left of it.
For those who prefer their folklore with a side of history, the ancient village of Nadur is hosting a traditional ‘Għana’ night on May 20. This traditional Maltese folk music event, held in the village square, offers a unique insight into the island’s cultural heritage. Expect impromptu poetry, traditional songs, and a warm Gozitan welcome.
Music, Food, and Fun in the Sun
Back on the main island, the annual Malta International Food Festival is taking over the historic streets of Rabat on May 23. This culinary celebration brings together some of Malta’s best chefs, offering a tantalizing array of local and international dishes. From pastizzi to paella, there’s something to tickle every taste bud.
If you’re more in the mood for music, head to the Malta Jazz Festival in Ta’ Qali on May 24. This year’s lineup features international jazz legends alongside Malta’s homegrown talent. Pack a picnic, grab a blanket, and enjoy a night of smooth sounds under the stars.
As the sun sets on another week in Malta and Gozo, we’re left with a sense of pride and gratitude. Pride in our rich cultural heritage, and gratitude for the diverse array of events that bring our communities together. So, whether you’re a local or a visitor, grab your sunscreen and your sense of adventure, and let’s make the most of what our beautiful islands have to offer.
As Maltese artist and poet, Ġanni Bonnici, once said, “Malta is not just a place on the map, it’s a feeling in the heart.” Let’s celebrate that feeling this week.
