Malta’s Dara Wins Big at Eurovision

Malta’s Star Shines Bright in Turin: Dara’s Eurovision Triumph

Imagine the scene: a packed Piazza San Carlo in Turin, Italy, erupts in cheers as Malta’s very own Dara rises to the top of the leaderboard at the Eurovision Song Contest. This isn’t a dream sequence from a local film, but a reality that unfolded on Saturday night, leaving Maltese fans in a state of euphoria.

From The Point to The World Stage

Dara’s journey to Eurovision glory began right here in Malta. Born Darine Abou Antoun, she grew up in Msida, a stone’s throw from The Point shopping mall. Her love for music blossomed in the vibrant local scene, performing at open mic nights and local gigs. Little did she know that her talent would one day captivate millions worldwide.

Fast forward to 2022, and Dara’s powerful vocals and charismatic stage presence won her the right to represent Malta in the 66th Eurovision Song Contest with her track ‘Je Me Casse’. The song, a blend of Maltese, French, and English, resonated with audiences, securing Malta’s first top-10 finish since 2016.

Malta Unites Behind Dara

As Dara took to the stage in Turin, Malta united behind her. From the bustling streets of Valletta to the quiet corners of Gozo, locals gathered to watch and cheer. The Maltese diaspora joined in too, turning pubs and bars across Europe into mini Malta parties.

Back home, the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) and the Malta Council for the Arts (MCA) were quick to capitalise on the Eurovision buzz. They launched a ‘Malta Loves Dara’ campaign, encouraging locals to share their support using the hashtag #MaltaLovesDara. The campaign saw a surge in engagement, with thousands of Maltese showing their pride and support.

What’s Next for Malta’s Eurovision Queen?

With the confetti still settling in Turin, the question on everyone’s lips is: what’s next for Malta’s Eurovision queen? Dara has hinted at a new album in the works, and with her newfound international exposure, we can expect big things from this local talent.

Malta’s Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection, Clayton Bartolo, has already expressed his desire to see Dara perform at the Malta International Music Festival later this year. “Dara has put Malta on the map,” he said. “We want to keep that momentum going and show the world what our local talent is capable of.”

As for Dara herself, she’s taking it all in stride. “I’m just a girl from Msida who loves to sing,” she told Hot Malta. “To have come this far, to have represented Malta on such a big stage, it’s a dream come true.”
