Malta’s Tech Pioneer Jesmond Pace Retires
FACT’s Founder Jesmond Pace Retires: A Chapter Closes on Malta’s Tech Scene
In the heart of Malta’s tech hub, at the corner of Triq San Giljan, the sign outside FACT’s offices still reads ‘Founder: Jesmond Pace’. But as of today, that title is no more. Jesmond Pace, the man who steered Malta’s tech scene for over two decades, has announced his retirement.
From Garage to Tech Hub
Jesmond’s journey began in the late 90s, in a garage in Birkirkara. With a passion for computers and a dream to bring tech to Malta, he founded FACT, an acronym for ‘Foundation for the Advancement of Technology in Malta’. From those humble beginnings, FACT grew to become a powerhouse in Malta’s tech scene, spawning numerous startups and initiatives.
Under Jesmond’s leadership, FACT didn’t just provide tech solutions; it fostered a community. It was the place where ideas were born, collaborations forged, and dreams turned into reality. It was, in many ways, the heartbeat of Malta’s tech revolution.
A Legacy of Innovation
Jesmond’s impact on Malta’s tech scene is undeniable. He was instrumental in setting up the first internet exchange point in Malta, a move that significantly improved the island’s connectivity. He also played a pivotal role in establishing the Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA), a government agency dedicated to driving Malta’s digital transformation.
But perhaps Jesmond’s most enduring legacy is the countless individuals he inspired and mentored. Many of Malta’s tech leaders today cut their teeth at FACT under Jesmond’s guidance. “He was more than just a boss,” recalls one former employee. “He was a mentor, a friend, and a constant source of inspiration.”
: FACT’s New Chapter
While Jesmond’s retirement marks the end of an era, it also signals the beginning of a new one for FACT. The organization will now be led by its current CEO, Mario Vella, who has been with FACT for over a decade. “Jesmond leaves big shoes to fill,” says Mario, “but we’re ready to carry on his legacy, to continue pushing Malta’s tech scene forward.”
Jesmond, for his part, is looking forward to his retirement. “I’ve spent my life building FACT, and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved,” he says. “But it’s time for me to step back, to let the next generation take the reins. I have no doubt that FACT, and Malta’s tech scene, are in good hands.”
As Jesmond Pace steps down, Malta’s tech community reflects on his legacy. But as they look to the future, they do so with confidence, knowing that the spirit of innovation and progress that Jesmond cultivated will continue to guide them.
