Malta’s Zach Vella Completes Epic London-Malta Run for Homeless

Zach Vella’s Marathon of Hope: From London to Malta for the Homeless

Imagine running 1,800 kilometers, across countries, through varied terrains, all under your own steam. Now, imagine doing it not for personal glory, but to raise awareness and funds for Malta’s homeless. This is exactly what local athlete Zach Vella accomplished, completing his epic London-Malta run yesterday at the iconic Mnajdra Temples.

An Unyielding Journey

Zach’s journey began on October 15th, 2021, from the historic Tower Bridge in London. He traversed through France, Switzerland, Italy, and finally, his home country, Malta. His route took him through bustling cities, serene countryside, and challenging mountain paths. He faced harsh weather conditions, fatigue, and physical pain, but his resolve never wavered.

“There were times when I wanted to give up,” Zach admits, “but the thought of those struggling on our streets kept me going.”

Malta’s Support Along the Way

Zach’s run was more than just a physical feat; it was a testament to Malta’s community spirit. Locals cheered him on, offered him food and shelter, and even joined him for parts of the journey. The Maltese embassy in Rome even arranged a special pasta dinner for him.

Back home, Maltese communities tracked his progress, with many leaving encouraging messages on his social media pages. The Malta Tourism Authority and the Ministry for Inclusion, Social Well-being and Active Ageing also lent their support, helping to spread the word about Zach’s mission.

Arrival and Impact

Zach’s arrival in Malta was met with a heroes’ welcome. He was greeted by family, friends, and supporters at Mnajdra Temples, where he planted a tree to symbolize his journey’s end. The tree, a gift from the Malta Tourism Authority, will be cared for by the Ministry for Inclusion, Social Wellbeing and Active Ageing, a poignant reminder of Zach’s cause.

Zach’s run has raised thousands of euros for Malta’s homeless. The funds will go towards supporting local NGOs working with the homeless community, providing them with essential services and a pathway towards a better life.

“This run was never about me,” Zach says, “It was about those who have nothing. I hope my journey has brought some attention to their plight and inspired others to help.”

As Zach looks to the future, he encourages everyone to play their part in supporting Malta’s homeless. “It could be volunteering your time, donating, or simply showing kindness. Every little bit helps.”
