Malta’s Zach Vella Completes Epic Run for Homeless

Zach Vella’s Marathon of Hope: From London to Malta for the Homeless

Imagine running 1,800 kilometers, across countries, through varied terrains, all under the scorching sun and pouring rain. This is not a hypothetical scenario, but the reality faced by Maltese athlete Zach Vella, who completed this monumental feat on Sunday, raising awareness and funds for Malta’s homeless population.

An Epic Journey

Zach’s journey began on August 12th in London, with a simple mission: to run back home to Malta. His route took him through France, Switzerland, Italy, and finally, across the Mediterranean to his beloved island. He faced numerous challenges, from physical exhaustion to harsh weather conditions, but his resolve never wavered.

“There were times when I wanted to give up,” Zach admitted, “But I thought about the people I was doing this for, and that kept me going.”

Malta’s Homeless Crisis

Malta’s homeless population is a pressing issue, with an estimated 700 people currently without a permanent home. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this situation, leading to an increase in the number of people living on the streets. Zach’s run aimed to shed light on this often-overlooked issue and raise funds for local charity, Dar tal-Providenza.

Dar tal-Providenza, located in Siġġiewi, provides residential care for people with disabilities. The funds raised from Zach’s run will go towards improving their facilities and services. “We’re incredibly grateful to Zach for his incredible feat and for choosing to support our cause,” said a spokesperson for Dar tal-Providenza.

A Hero’s Welcome

Zach’s journey came to an end at the iconic Mnajdra Temples in Żurrieq, where he was greeted by a cheering crowd of supporters. His family, friends, and members of the local community had gathered to celebrate his achievement and show their support for his cause.

“Running into Malta, seeing the familiar coastline, it was an emotional moment,” Zach said, tears in his eyes. “But knowing that I’ve raised awareness and funds for a great cause, that’s what makes it all worthwhile.”

Zach’s run has not only raised awareness about Malta’s homeless crisis but has also inspired many. His determination and resilience serve as a reminder that, even in the face of adversity, we can make a difference.

As for Zach, he’s taking some well-deserved rest, but he’s already to his next challenge. “I don’t know what it is yet,” he said with a smile, “But I’m sure I’ll find something. After all, there’s always more to do, more to achieve.”
