Malta’s Zach Vella Completes Epic Run for Homeless
Malta’s Zach Vella: From London Streets to Home, Running for the Homeless
Imagine pounding the pavement for 1,500 miles, not for personal glory, but to raise awareness and funds for Malta’s homeless. This is exactly what local hero Zach Vella has accomplished, completing an epic run from London to his hometown in Malta. Let’s look Zach’s incredible journey and the impact he’s making right here at home.
From Concept to Reality
Zach Vella, a 32-year-old Maltese runner based in London, hatched the idea of running back home to Malta last year. “I wanted to do something meaningful, something that would make a difference,” he says. Little did he know that his decision would spark a wave of support and inspire countless locals.
On April 17, 2023, Zach set off from the iconic Tower Bridge in London, equipped with just a backpack, running shoes, and an unyielding determination. His goal? To raise €50,000 for Dar Merħba Bik, a local NGO that supports Malta’s homeless community.
Running Through History and Home
Zach’s route took him through eight countries, crossing paths with history and kind-hearted strangers. He traversed the white cliffs of Dover, ran through the picturesque French countryside, and even faced the grueling Alps. “Every step was a challenge,” Zach recalls, “but every step brought me closer to home.”
After 87 days and 1,500 miles, Zach finally set foot on Maltese soil. He was greeted by a cheering crowd at the Mdina Gate on July 2nd, a moment he describes as “overwhelming and surreal.”
Impact at Home
Zach’s run has not only raised an astonishing €65,000 for Dar Merħba Bik but has also sparked a conversation about homelessness in Malta. “We often walk past homeless people without a second thought,” Zach says, “I wanted to change that. I wanted people to see them, to understand their stories, and to care.”
Thanks to Zach’s efforts, Dar Merħba Bik can now expand its services, providing more meals, clothing, and support to Malta’s homeless community. “Zach’s run has been a breakthrough for us,” says Claire Bonello, the NGO’s coordinator. “It’s not just about the money; it’s about the awareness he’s raised, the conversations he’s started.”
Zach’s journey may be over, but his impact is far from finished. He plans to continue raising funds and awareness, turning his run into a marathon of change. “This is just the beginning,” he says, “I want to see a Malta where no one is left without a roof over their head.”
So, the next time you see a homeless person on the streets of Valletta, or Sliema, or any other Maltese town, remember Zach’s run. Remember that every person has a story, and every story deserves to be heard. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll be inspired to make a difference too.
