Malta’s Zach Vella Completes London-Malta Run for Homeless
Zach Vella: From London Streets to Malta’s Heart, Running for the Homeless
Imagine pounding the pavement, not just for miles, but for days, weeks, across countries, all to raise awareness and funds for a cause close to home. This is exactly what local hero Zach Vella has accomplished, completing an epic run from London to Malta in aid of the homeless.
From Concept to Reality
Zach, a 34-year-old Maltese living in London, hatched this ambitious plan last year. “I wanted to do something meaningful, something that would make a difference,” he told Hot Malta. With a background in endurance sports and a heart for social causes, Zach decided to combine his passions. He chose to support Dar Merħba Biss, a local NGO providing support to homeless individuals.
Preparation was grueling. Zach trained relentlessly, planning his route, and gathering sponsors. His support team, including his wife and friends, ensured he had everything he needed for the journey. On April 1st, 2023, Zach set off from London’s Tower Bridge, his destination: the iconic Triton Fountain in Valletta.
Running Through History and Home
Zach’s route took him through France, Switzerland, Italy, and finally, across the Mediterranean to Malta. He ran through historic cities, across challenging terrains, and even faced harsh weather conditions. But the toughest part, he admitted, was the emotional toll. “Seeing homeless people along the way, it was a constant reminder of why I was doing this,” he said.
Finally, on May 15th, after 55 days and over 2,000 kilometers, Zach stepped onto Malta’s soil. A crowd of supporters cheered him on as he ran the final stretch to Valletta. “It was overwhelming,” he recalled, “seeing all those familiar faces, feeling the love and support, it was worth every step.”
Making a Difference, One Step at a Time
Zach’s run has raised over €15,000 for Dar Merħba Biss. The funds will go towards providing food, clothing, and support services to Malta’s homeless population. “Every euro makes a difference,” said Maria Vella, the NGO’s coordinator. “We’re incredibly grateful to Zach for his dedication and for raising awareness about this important issue.”
Zach’s journey is more than just a remarkable feat of endurance. It’s a testament to the power of determination, the strength of community, and the impact one person can have. As he looks to the future, Zach encourages others to find their own way to make a difference. “It doesn’t have to be a big run,” he says, “it could be a small act of kindness, a donation, or just raising awareness. Every bit helps.”
