Couple’s Unusual Day Out: From Valletta’s Streets to Police Station

Imagine strolling hand in hand through the bustling streets of Valletta, the sun warming your face, and the next thing you know, you’re being led to a police station. This was the reality for a Maltese couple last weekend.

The Incident on Republic Street

According to eyewitnesses, the couple, both in their mid-thirties, were walking along Republic Street when they allegedly relieved a tourist of his wallet. The tourist, a 55-year-old man from Italy, noticed the theft immediately and raised an alarm. A quick-thinking local shopkeeper pressed the panic button, alerting the police.

“I saw the whole thing,” said Joe, a local shopkeeper who wished to remain anonymous. “They were acting suspiciously, and when the tourist noticed his wallet was gone, I knew something was up.”

The Chase and the Arrest

Police quickly arrived at the scene and gave chase. The couple, however, didn’t make it easy. They led the officers on a cat-and-mouse chase through the narrow streets of Valletta, past the Grandmaster’s Palace, and down to the Lower Barrakka Gardens.

“It was like something out of a movie,” said a tourist who witnessed the chase. “I’ve never seen anything like it in Valletta.”

Eventually, the couple was cornered and arrested. The stolen wallet, containing cash and credit cards, was recovered.

The Aftermath

The couple, both Maltese nationals, have been charged with pickpocketing and are due to appear in court next month. They have been released on bail pending their trial.

“This is a reminder that even in a safe country like Malta, tourists should always keep their valuables secure,” said a spokesperson for the Malta Police Force.

Meanwhile, the Italian tourist, who wishes to remain anonymous, has praised the quick response of the Maltese police. “I’m just glad I got my wallet back. It could have been much worse,” he said.

This incident serves as a stark reminder that crime can happen anywhere, even in the sun-soaked streets of Valletta. It’s a timely reminder for both locals and tourists to stay vigilant and keep their valuables safe.
