Man Arrested in Birkirkara Drug Bust
Drugs Seized in Birkirkara Road Stop: Man Arrested
In an early morning bust, police officers patrolling in Birkirkara intercepted a vehicle and discovered a stash of drugs hidden in the driver’s possession. The man, a 35-year-old resident of Msida, was subsequently charged and is now awaiting trial.
Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Bust
At around 7:30 AM on Tuesday, a team of police officers on routine patrol in Birkirkara pulled over a white Renault Clio for a routine check. The driver, later identified as Mario Xuereb, appeared nervous and fidgety, raising the officers’ suspicions. A quick search of the vehicle revealed a plastic bag containing a substance suspected to be cannabis, tucked away in the driver’s side door panel.
Xuereb was immediately arrested and taken into custody. The seized drugs, weighing approximately 50 grams, were sent for analysis. If confirmed as cannabis, this quantity could potentially result in a prison sentence of up to 9 years, according to Malta’s drug laws.
Neighbors React: “Not What We Expect in Our Quiet Street”
Xuereb’s arrest has through the quiet residential street where he lives with his family in Msida. Neighbors, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed their surprise and concern. “We’ve always known him as a quiet, respectful young man,” said one neighbor. “This is not what we expect to see happening in our quiet street.”
Another neighbor, who has lived on the street for over a decade, added, “We’re a close-knit community here. We look out for each other. This is a wake-up call that even in our small community, we’re not immune to these issues.”
Drug Laws in Malta: A Brief Overview
Malta’s drug laws, outlined in the Drug Dependence (Treatment Not Imprisonment) Act, categorize drugs into four schedules based on their potential for abuse and medical use. Cannabis falls under Schedule 1, which includes the most dangerous drugs. Possession of any amount can result in a prison sentence of up to 9 years, although first-time offenders often receive community service or fines.
Xuereb’s case will now proceed through the courts, where a magistrate will decide on the appropriate charge and sentence based on the evidence presented. In the meantime, police continue to patrol Malta’s streets, maintaining a zero-tolerance approach to drug-related crimes.
As the investigation into this case continues, Hot Malta will keep you updated on any new developments. If you have any information regarding this or any other drug-related activities, please contact the police or anonymously report it to Crime Stoppers on 119.
