Man Arrested in Għaxaq Drug Bust

Drugs Seized, Man Arrested in Għaxaq Roadblock

It was a quiet Tuesday morning in Għaxaq, the sun barely peeking over the horizon, when a routine roadblock turned into a significant bust for the Maltese police. A man, driving a silver Ford Focus, was pulled over at the junction of Triq San Ġorġ and Triq l-Imqades, his car and its contents about to reveal a hidden stash that would land him in serious trouble.

Early Morning Surprise

The roadblock, set up by the Għaxaq Police Station, was part of the ongoing efforts to keep Malta’s roads safe and drug-free. Little did the officers know that their morning shift would yield such a significant find. As the Ford Focus pulled up, the officers approached the vehicle, asking the driver for his license and registration.

The driver, a 35-year-old man from Birkirkara, seemed nervous, his hands trembling slightly as he handed over the documents. The officers, noticing his discomfort, decided to inspect the vehicle more thoroughly. It was then that they discovered a hidden compartment in the car’s boot, containing a substantial amount of illegal drugs.

Drugs and Cash Seized

The compartment held approximately 500 grams of cannabis, along with a smaller quantity of cocaine and ecstasy pills. A significant amount of cash, believed to be proceeds from drug sales, was also found in the car. The man was immediately arrested and taken into custody for questioning.

The drugs and cash were seized and will be used as evidence in the ongoing investigation. The man is expected to appear in court in the coming weeks, facing charges of drug possession and trafficking.

Community Reaction and Police Statement

News of the arrest and seizure spread quickly through Għaxaq and the rest of Malta. Many residents praised the police for their diligence and commitment to keeping their community safe. “We’re glad to see the police taking such a strong stance against drugs,” said a local shopkeeper who wished to remain anonymous.

The Malta Police Force released a statement following the incident, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining a drug-free Malta. “We will continue to conduct regular roadblocks and patrols to ensure the safety of our communities,” the statement read. “We urge anyone with information about drug activities to come forward and report it to the police.”

In other news, the Għaxaq Local Council has announced plans to install more CCTV cameras in the area, further bolstering the community’s security measures.
