Drugs Seized in St. Julian’s Road Stop: Man Arrested

In the heart of Malta’s bustling St. Julian’s, a routine traffic stop took an unexpected turn when police discovered a stash of drugs on a man’s person. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, has led to the arrest of a 32-year-old man from Msida.

Traffic Stop Turns into Drug Bust

According to a statement from the Malta Police Force, officers stopped a vehicle on Triq San Ġorġ Preca, a busy street in the Paceville area of St. Julian’s, around 8 PM. The driver, a man from Msida, was asked to step out of the vehicle for a routine check. It was during this check that the police discovered a quantity of suspected cannabis and ecstasy tablets.

The man was immediately arrested and taken to St. Julian’s Police Station for further questioning. The drugs, along with the vehicle, were seized pending analysis and investigation.

Community Reacts: “Not What We Want in Our Streets”

News of the arrest has sparked a wave of reactions from the local community. Many residents have taken to social media to express their relief and support for the police’s actions. “We’ve been seeing an increase in drug-related incidents in the area,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s not what we want in our streets, especially with so many young people around.”

St. Julian’s Mayor, Gino De Winton, also weighed in on the matter. “I commend the police for their swift action,” he said. “We’re committed to keeping our streets safe, and incidents like these show that we’re not tolerating drug-related activities in our community.”

Police: “No Tolerance for Drug-Related Crime”

Inspector Joseph Mercieca, from the St. Julian’s Police Station, echoed the mayor’s sentiments. “We have a zero-tolerance approach to drug-related crime,” he said. “We’re committed to keeping our streets safe, and we urge anyone with information about such activities to come forward.”

This latest arrest is part of an ongoing effort by the Malta Police Force to crack down on drug-related crime in the area. In recent months, there has been an increase in police presence and patrols in St. Julian’s, particularly in the Paceville area.

As the investigation into this latest incident continues, the man remains in police custody. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 9 years imprisonment and a fine of up to €23,000 under the Maltese Drugs Act.
