Early on a crisp January morning, the usually tranquil streets of Mġarr echoed with the wail of ambulance sirens. A cyclist, a local man in his forties, lay injured on Triq San Martin, his bike crumpled nearby. The cause? A collision with a car, leaving him with life-threatening injuries. As the community grapples with this shocking incident, it raises crucial questions about cycling safety in Malta.

What Happened in Mġarr?

Eyewitnesses report that the cyclist, a regular in Mġarr’s cycling community, was heading towards Mosta when the accident occurred. The driver of the car involved, a local resident, immediately stopped and cooperated with the police. The cyclist was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Inspector Ian Abela from the Rabat Police Station confirmed, “We are investigating the cause of the accident. We urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.”

Cycling Safety in Malta: A Growing Concern

Malta’s cycling community has been growing steadily, with more locals and tourists opting for two wheels to explore the islands. However, the lack of dedicated cycling lanes and poor road infrastructure have led to a rise in accidents. According to the Malta Police, there were 17 cycling-related accidents in 2021 alone, with five resulting in serious injuries.

“We need urgent action to improve cycling safety,” says Mark Borg, spokesperson for Maltese cycling advocacy group, Pedal Malta. “More cycling lanes, better road signage, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws can save lives.”

Mġarr: A Cycling Hub in the Making

Mġarr, with its scenic routes and proximity to other towns, is becoming a popular cycling hub. The local council has plans to improve cycling infrastructure, including a proposed cycling lane along Triq San Martin. However, these plans have been criticized as too little, too late.

Local resident and cyclist, Joseph Xuereb, says, “We’ve been asking for better cycling facilities for years. It’s sad that it takes a serious accident for our concerns to be taken seriously.”

: What Needs to Change?

As the cyclist fights for his life, the Mġarr community and the wider cycling community call for urgent action. They demand better cycling infrastructure, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, and increased awareness among both drivers and cyclists.

Mark Borg concludes, “We need to treat cycling as a legitimate form of transport, not just a hobby. That means investing in infrastructure and education. We owe it to our cycling community, and to those who have been injured, to make our roads safer.”
