MUMN vs Govt: Why Nurses Feel Left Behind in Progression Race
MUMN’s Frustration: Why Nurses Feel Left Behind in Progression Race
Imagine you’re a nurse at Mater Dei Hospital, Malta’s primary healthcare facility. You’ve been working tirelessly, often under challenging conditions, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. You’ve seen colleagues from allied health professions – like physiotherapists and occupational therapists – get a pay rise and career progression. But you? You’re still waiting. This isn’t a case of sour grapes; it’s a growing concern among Malta’s nurses, who feel left behind in the race for professional advancement.
MUMN’s Stance: A Pay Disparity That’s Hard to Swallow
The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) has been vocal about this disparity. They argue that nurses, who form the backbone of our healthcare system, deserve equal recognition and reward. MUMN President Paul Pace told Hot Malta, “Our members are demoralized. They see others progress while they’re stuck. It’s not about jealousy; it’s about fairness and recognition.”
MUMN points to a 2019 report by the Public Sector Pay Review Committee, which recommended a 5% pay increase for nurses. Yet, this hasn’t materialized. Meanwhile, allied health professionals have seen their salaries increase by up to 15% since 2018.
Government’s Response: A Matter of Prioritization
The government maintains that the progression of allied health workers isn’t a snub to nurses. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Health told us, “It’s a matter of prioritization. We’re addressing the needs of all our healthcare professionals, but we have to do it in a phased manner due to budgetary constraints.”
However, nurses aren’t convinced. They argue that the government’s priorities seem skewed, especially when you consider that Malta’s nursing workforce is significantly larger than that of allied health professions. According to the Health Information and Statistics Unit, there were over 4,000 nurses in Malta in 2020, compared to around 1,500 allied health professionals.
: A Fight for Fairness
MUMN isn’t backing down. They’re planning further action, including consultations with members and possible industrial action if necessary. Paul Pace says, “We’re not asking for the moon. We’re asking for fairness. Our nurses deserve better, and we’ll keep fighting until they get it.”
In the meantime, nurses continue their vital work, often unseen and underappreciated. They’re the ones comforting patients, administering treatments, and keeping our healthcare system running. They deserve to feel valued, respected, and fairly compensated. It’s high time we, as a society, recognize their worth and demand that our government does the same.
