New Apostolic Nuncio Mgr Wojciech Załuski Arrives in Malta
New Apostolic Nuncio Mgr Wojciech Załuski: A Fresh Face at the Vatican’s Malta Embassy
Malta’s sunny skies welcomed a new religious diplomat on Tuesday, as Mgr Wojciech Załuski, the newly appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Malta, stepped off the plane at Malta International Airport. The Polish prelate, who has served in various diplomatic roles at the Vatican, is set to replace Archbishop Alberto Perlasca, who has held the post since 2015.
From Rome to the Mediterranean
Born in 1964 in the Polish town of Kluczbork, Załuski, 58, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. After completing his theological studies in Poland, he moved to Rome to pursue a doctorate in Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He then embarked on a career in the Vatican’s diplomatic service, serving in various embassies around the world, including stints in the United States, Russia, and most recently, as the Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine.
Now, he finds himself in Malta, a small island nation with a big heart, where the Catholic Church plays a significant role in the lives of its people. As he settles into his new residence at the Apostolic Nunciature in Floriana, Załuski will be tasked with representing the Holy See’s interests in Malta and fostering relations between the Vatican and the local Church.
Navigating Malta’s Multicultural scene
Malta, with its unique blend of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences, presents a fascinating cultural scene for the new Nuncio. Załuski will find himself in a country where Catholicism is deeply ingrained, yet also home to a growing number of other faiths, including Islam, which has a significant presence due to Malta’s proximity to North Africa.
His diplomatic skills will be put to the test as he engages with Malta’s diverse religious communities, promoting interfaith dialogue and understanding. He will also be expected to maintain strong ties with the local Church, supporting Archbishop Charles Scicluna and the Maltese bishops in their pastoral work.
: Załuski’s Priorities
In an interview with Vatican News upon his appointment, Załuski expressed his eagerness to begin his mission in Malta. He highlighted a spirit of fraternity and unity among the faithful, as well as promoting the Church’s social teachings in the face of contemporary challenges.
“I am ready to serve the Church in Malta with humility and dedication,” he said. “I look forward to getting to know the people of Malta, understanding their needs and concerns, and working together to build a more just and fraternal society.”
As he begins his new role, Malta watches with interest to see how Mgr Wojciech Załuski will make his mark on the island’s religious scene. With his extensive diplomatic experience and warm, approachable demeanor, he is set to make a significant contribution to the Church in Malta.
