New Apostolic Nuncio Mgr Wojciech Załuski Arrives in Malta

New Apostolic Nuncio Mgr Wojciech Załuski: A Fresh Face at the Vatican’s Malta Embassy

As the sun cast its golden rays over the Grand Harbour, a new chapter unfolded in Malta’s rich ecclesiastical history. Mgr Wojciech Załuski, the freshly appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Malta, stepped off the plane at Malta International Airport, ready to take up his new post.

From Poland to the Mediterranean

Hailing from the small town of Łagów in Poland, Mgr Załuski brings a wealth of diplomatic and ecclesiastical experience to his new role. Before his appointment, he served as the Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine, a position he held since 2017. Prior to that, he was the Nuncio to Belarus and the Apostolic Delegate to the Russian Federation. His journey to Malta, however, is not just a geographical shift but a cultural one as well, taking him from the heart of Eastern Europe to the sunny shores of the Mediterranean.

Navigating Malta’s Ecclesiastical scene

Malta, an archipelago of just over 400,000 people, is predominantly Roman Catholic, with the Church playing a significant role in its history and culture. Mgr Załuski will be taking over from Archbishop Albert Palloth, who has served as the Apostolic Nuncio since 2016. His task will be to build upon the strong ecclesiastical ties that Malta shares with the Vatican, while also fostering a deeper understanding of the local Church’s needs and concerns.

One of his first stops is likely to be the historic Archbishop’s Palace in Mdina, where he will meet with the Archbishop of Malta, Charles J. Scicluna. This historic building, once a fortress, now serves as the seat of the Maltese Church, offering a stark reminder of the Church’s deep-rooted history on the island.

Diplomacy and Dialogue: Załuski’s Approach

In an interview with Vatican News, Mgr Załuski expressed his eagerness to engage with the local Church and the Maltese people. “I am ready to serve the Church in Malta with humility and dedication,” he said. His approach, marked by diplomacy and dialogue, is likely to be a key factor in his tenure. He has already indicated his intention to learn Maltese, a testament to his commitment to understanding and engaging with the local community.

His diplomatic skills will be put to the test as he navigates the complex political and ecclesiastical scene of Malta. From the ongoing debate surrounding divorce and LGBTQ+ rights to the Church’s role in education and social welfare, Mgr Załuski will find himself at the heart of many of these discussions.

Yet, despite the challenges, there is much to look forward to. Malta’s unique blend of cultures, its rich history, and its vibrant faith make it a fascinating place for a diplomat of the Church. As Mgr Załuski settles into his new role, one can only imagine the positive impact he will have on the Church in Malta and the island’s relationship with the Vatican.

Welcome, Mgr Wojciech Załuski, to Malta. We look forward to the fresh perspectives and insights you will bring to our shores.
