Open day at Fort Bengħajsa ahead of restoration works

Ever wondered what lies behind the imposing walls of Fort Bengħajsa, standing sentinel over the Grand Harbour? This Sunday, you’ll get your chance. The Fort’s heavy wooden doors will creak open, inviting the public for a rare glimpse inside before restoration works begin.

Built in the 17th century to defend Malta’s strategic harbours, Fort Bengħajsa has witnessed centuries of history. It’s seen sieges, served as a military barracks, and even housed a prison. But time hasn’t been kind. Neglect and the elements have taken their toll, leaving the Fort a crumbling shell of its former glory.

That’s all set to change. The Heritage Malta team is gearing up for a major restoration project. But before they don their hard hats and wield their tools, they’re throwing open the Fort’s doors for a public open day.

Step through the Fort’s heavy doors and you’ll find yourself transported back in time. Guided tours will lead you through the Fort’s labyrinthine corridors and chambers, each one echoing with the echoes of history. You’ll see where soldiers once stood watch, where prisoners were held, and where military strategists plotted their campaigns.

But it’s not just about the past. The open day is also a chance to look to the future. Heritage Malta will be on hand to talk about their plans for the Fort’s restoration. They’ll explain how they intend to breathe new life into these ancient walls, turning them into a vibrant heritage site for future generations to enjoy.
