Imagine the cobblestone streets of Valletta, Malta’s capital city, echoing with the soulful strains of opera. This isn’t a scene from a period drama, but a reality thanks to the Opera Nova Project. On a balmy evening in June 2021, the first notes of ‘Nessun dorma’ from Puccini’s Turandot rang out from the Grandmaster’s Palace, marking the birth of this unique cultural initiative. Two years on, we celebrate its remarkable journey.

The Opera Nova Project was born out of a desire to bring world-class opera performances to Malta’s historic venues, making them accessible to both locals and tourists. Dr. Antonella Vassallo, the project’s founder and artistic director, shared her vision with Hot Malta, “I wanted to create a platform that showcases the beauty of opera in our beautiful, historic spaces. Valletta, with its stunning architecture, is the perfect stage.”

The project’s debut performance, ‘Opera in the Streets’, was a resounding success. The grandeur of the Grandmaster’s Palace provided a stunning backdrop for the opera singers, while the public enjoyed the performance from the nearby St. George’s Square. The event was a testament to the power of opera to transform public spaces and bring communities together.

The first two years of the Opera Nova Project have been a rollercoaster ride of challenges and triumphs. From navigating the complexities of staging performances in historic venues to dealing with the uncertainties of the pandemic, the team has faced numerous obstacles. Yet, they’ve also experienced remarkable highs, such as sold-out performances and standing ovations.

One of the project’s most significant triumphs was its 2022 production of ‘La Bohème’ at the Astra Theatre. The intimate setting allowed for a unique, immersive experience that left audiences spellbound. Vassallo recalls, “The audience was so close to the performers, they could feel their emotions. It was a truly magical experience.”

As the Opera Nova Project looks to the future, it has big plans. Vassallo teases, “We’re exploring new venues and innovative ways to present opera. We want to push boundaries and make opera accessible to everyone.” Upcoming performances include a collaboration with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and a production of ‘La Traviata’ at the Mediterranean Conference Centre.

But the project isn’t just about big productions. Vassallo is passionate about nurturing local talent. “We’re committed to providing opportunities for Maltese singers and musicians. Opera isn’t just about grand performances; it’s about community and nurturing talent.”
