Two Years of Melodious Magic: Opera Nova Project Celebrates in Style

Imagine, if you will, the grand, historic Manoel Theatre in Valletta, Malta. The sun dips below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow over the building’s elegant façade. Inside, the air hums with anticipation as the audience takes their seats, ready to be transported to a world of passion, drama, and beautiful music. This is no ordinary evening; it’s a celebration, a milestone in Malta’s cultural calendar – the second anniversary of the Opera Nova Project.

From Concept to Reality: The Birth of Opera Nova

The Opera Nova Project was born out of a desire to bring world-class opera to Malta’s stages. Launched in 2020, it was a collaboration between the Malta Arts Council and the Ministry for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government. The project aimed to nurture local talent, attract international artists, and enrich Malta’s cultural scene. Little did they know that their baby would grow into a resounding success, captivating audiences and leaving its mark on Malta’s cultural scene.

Two Years, Eight Operas: A Symphony of Success

In its two-year run, Opera Nova has presented eight operas, each one a testament to the project’s commitment to diversity and excellence. From Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” to Puccini’s “La Bohème”, from Verdi’s “La Traviata” to Bizet’s “Carmen”, each production has been a masterclass in opera, drawing both local and international talent.

Take, for instance, last year’s “Carmen”. Directed by the renowned Italian director Alessandro Talevi, it was a visual and auditory feast, with its vibrant costumes, evocative set design, and, of course, the music – that unforgettable “Habanera” sung by the fiery and talented Maltese soprano, ing. Claire Debono.

: The Future of Opera Nova

As Opera Nova looks to the future, it’s clear that the project has no intention of resting on its laurels. Plans are already underway for the next season, with promises of more international collaborations, innovative productions, and, of course, stunning performances. The project’s success has not only enriched Malta’s cultural scene but has also put the island on the international opera map.

Dr. Albert Marshall, Chairman of the Malta Arts Council, sums it up perfectly: “Opera Nova has not only brought world-class opera to Malta but has also provided a platform for local talent to shine. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved in these two years, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

So, mark your calendars, opera lovers. The future of opera in Malta is bright, and it’s happening right here, in the heart of the Mediterranean.
