Żurrieq Residents: “No Way” to Nigret Development

In the quaint, coastal village of Żurrieq, nestled between the sea and the ancient Ġġantija Temples, a battle is brewing. Residents are up in arms against plans to develop a sprawling complex in the picturesque Nigret valley, a green lung that’s been a part of their lives for generations.

What’s at Stake?

The proposed development, a brainchild of local businessman Joe Xuereb, includes a luxury hotel, apartments, and a marina. Xuereb argues that the project will bring jobs and tourism to the area. But Żurrieq’s residents see it differently. They fear a concrete jungle will replace their rural idyll, and the influx of tourists will overwhelm their quiet village.

“We’re not against development,” says Maria Grech, a Żurrieq native and one of the leading voices against the project. “But this is too much, too fast. It’s not what Żurrieq needs or wants.”

Green vs. Gold

The Nigret valley is more than just a scenic spot. It’s a vital ecosystem, home to native flora and fauna, and a popular spot for hiking and birdwatching. Environmentalists warn that the development could lead to soil erosion, loss of biodiversity, and increased traffic congestion.

But Xuereb insists his project is environmentally friendly. “We’ve done our homework,” he says. “We’re committed to preserving the valley’s natural beauty while creating jobs and boosting the local economy.”

Fighting Back

Żurrieq’s residents aren’t taking Xuereb’s word for it. They’ve formed a pressure group, Żurrieq Nistghu (Żurrieq Says No), and have been rallying support, collecting signatures, and lobbying politicians. They’ve even launched a social media campaign, #SaveNigret.

“We won’t let Żurrieq become another Paceville,” says Grech, referring to Malta’s notorious party town. “We love our village just the way it is.”

The fight is far from over. The Planning Authority is still considering Xuereb’s application, and Żurrieq Nistghu is gearing up for a long battle. But one thing’s for sure: Żurrieq’s residents won’t go down without a fight.

“This is our home,” says Grech. “We won’t let it be destroyed for a few quick bucks.”
