Abela: PL Protects Maltese Through Crisis
‘PL protects people one crisis after another’: Abela
Imagine standing in the heart of Valletta, the sun casting its warm glow on the Grandmaster’s Palace, as Prime Minister Robert Abela addresses a sea of people. That was the scene last week, with Abela delivering a message that has become all too familiar in recent times: the PL’s commitment to protecting Maltese people, one crisis after another.
From Pandemic to Economic Downturn
Abela’s speech, delivered at the Labour Party’s annual conference, was a retrospective on the PL’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and a look ahead to the economic challenges that lie ahead. The pandemic, he said, had tested the party’s resolve, but it had risen to the occasion, protecting Maltese lives and livelihoods.
Abela pointed to the swift implementation of lockdowns, the provision of financial aid to businesses and individuals, and the rollout of the vaccination programme as evidence of the PL’s commitment to its people. “We didn’t just react to the crisis,” he said, “we planned for it, and we planned for what comes next.”
Economic Recovery: A Top Priority
Abela acknowledged the economic downturn that the pandemic has brought, with businesses struggling and unemployment rising. But he was quick to point out that the PL has a plan for recovery, too. “We won’t let this crisis define us,” he said. “We’ll use it to build a stronger, more resilient economy.”
He outlined plans to invest in green energy, to support local businesses, and to create new jobs in the tech sector. He also promised to protect the most vulnerable in society, ensuring that no one is left behind in the recovery effort.
Political Opposition: A Divided House
Abela’s speech was delivered against a backdrop of political division. The PN, he said, had offered nothing but criticism and opposition, with no constructive alternatives. “They’re more interested in scoring political points than in helping Malta through this crisis,” he said.
But Abela also had a message for his own party. “We can’t rest on our laurels,” he said. “We have to keep working, keep listening, keep improving. That’s the only way we can keep protecting our people.”
As the sun set over Valletta, Abela’s words echoed through the streets. The PL, he said, is a party of action, not words. And as Malta faces into the next phase of the pandemic and the challenges of economic recovery, the people of Malta will be hoping that he’s right.
