Abela: ‘PL Protects People Through One Crisis After Another’

Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela stood before a packed Labour Party conference in the Mediterranean Conference Centre on Saturday, his voice echoing through the historic building as he praised his party’s resilience and commitment to the people of Malta. “We are a party that protects,” he declared, “one crisis after another.”

Navigating Challenges

Abela’s speech was a retrospective journey through the Labour Party’s (PL) tenure, highlighting their response to many challenges. From the financial crisis of 2008 to the COVID-19 pandemic, Abela emphasized the PL’s role in safeguarding Maltese citizens. He reminded the audience of the party’s swift action in the early days of the pandemic, implementing strict measures to protect public health, a stark contrast to the initial chaos seen in some European countries.

Abela also touched on the party’s commitment to economic growth and social justice. He pointed to the party’s track record in creating jobs and improving social welfare, citing the increase in the minimum wage and the introduction of the Affordability Scheme for housing. “We are a party that works for everyone,” he stated, “not just the few.”

While Abela’s speech was largely focused on the past, he also looked to the future. He emphasized the party’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, highlighting projects like the Delimara Power Station conversion and the upcoming Smart City in Ħal Far. He also pledged to continue investing in education and healthcare, two sectors he believes are crucial for Malta’s future.

Abela also addressed the ongoing issue of corruption, acknowledging the challenges faced by the party but expressing his determination to root out any wrongdoing. “We will not shy away from difficult conversations or tough decisions,” he stated, “because we are committed to doing what is right, not what is easy.”

Party Unity and Support

The conference was a show of unity for the PL, with party faithful cheering and applauding Abela’s every word. The prime minister was joined on stage by party heavyweights, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health Chris Fearne, and Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Clyde Caruana. The conference was also an opportunity for the party to show its support for Abela, who has faced criticism from some within the party over his handling of certain issues.

Abela, however, seemed undeterred by any internal dissent. He ended his speech with a call to action, urging party members and supporters to continue working together to build a better Malta. “We are a party that protects,” he repeated, “and we will continue to do so, one crisis after another.”
