Imagine strolling through a lush, vibrant garden in the heart of Malta, a taste of the UK’s prestigious Chelsea Flower Show, right here in our sunny islands. This isn’t a dream; it’s happening at the Malta National Aquarium in Qawra. The aquarium has transformed its outdoor space into a blooming spectacle inspired by the world-renowned Chelsea Flower Show.

From London to Qawra: The Chelsea Connection

The Chelsea Flower Show, held annually in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, is a beacon in the gardening calendar. This year, however, it’s not just the UK that’s basking in the glory of blooming beauty. The Malta National Aquarium, in collaboration with local nurseries and florists, has brought a slice of Chelsea to the Mediterranean.

“We wanted to bring a touch of the UK to Malta,” says Mark Spiteri, the aquarium’s manager. “The Chelsea Flower Show is iconic, and we thought, why not bring that inspiration here?”

Malta’s Blooming Response

Local nurseries and florists have risen to the challenge, creating stunning displays that rival their UK counterparts. From vibrant flower beds to intricate topiary, the Qawra gardens are a riot of colour and texture.

“It’s been a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase what we can do,” says Joseph Xuereb, from Valletta-based florist, Joseph’s Flowers. “We’ve created a display inspired by the Mediterranean, using local plants and flowers.”

More Than Just Flowers

But it’s not just about the flowers. The Chelsea in Malta event also includes workshops, talks, and family-friendly activities. There’s even a ‘Show Within a Show’ – a miniature version of the Chelsea Flower Show, complete with tiny exhibits and a model of the famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show Pavilion.

“We want to make this more than just a pretty garden,” says Mark. “We want to educate, inspire, and create a fun day out for all the family.”

And the best part? You don’t need a plane ticket to enjoy it. The Chelsea in Malta event is running throughout May, and entry is included with your aquarium ticket.
