€13K Cocaine Bust in Qrendi: Woman Charged
Cocaine Cache: €13,000 Stash Unearthed in Quiet Qrendi
In the unassuming village of Qrendi, nestled between the ancient temples and the Mediterranean Sea, a woman’s residence has become the unlikely centre of a drugs bust. The Malta Police Force has charged a local woman following the discovery of cocaine worth an estimated €13,000 at her home.
The Discovery
The bust unfolded on Tuesday afternoon when police, acting on a tip-off, raided the woman’s residence in Triq il-Kuncizzjoni, Qrendi. Hidden within the house, they found 130 grams of high-purity cocaine, ready for distribution. The street value of the seized drugs is estimated to be around €13,000.
Police also seized €1,500 in cash, believed to be the proceeds of drug sales, and various paraphernalia associated with drug trafficking. The woman, a 35-year-old Qrendi resident, was subsequently charged with trafficking and possession of illegal drugs.
Qrendi: A Surprising Hotspot
Qrendi, known for its rich history and scenic views, is not typically associated with drug trafficking. However, this bust is a stark reminder that no community is immune to the reach of organised crime. The quiet village, home to just over 2,000 people, is perhaps best known for the Ġgantija Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its annual village feast.
Local residents, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed shock at the news. “We’ve always felt safe here,” said one resident. “It’s a close-knit community. We never expected something like this to happen here.”
The Investigation Continues
Police investigations are ongoing, with officers exploring whether the woman was acting alone or as part of a larger network. Superintendent Edwin Vass, leading the investigation, told Hot Malta, “We are treating this as a significant seizure. We believe it has disrupted a substantial part of the local drug trade.”
This seizure is part of the Malta Police Force’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking on the island. In recent years, there has been a concerted effort to disrupt drug supply chains and bring traffickers to justice.
In the heart of Qrendi, a quiet village with a rich history, a drugs bust has through the community. As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: no community is immune to the reach of organised crime.
