Kevin Camilleri Elected GWU’s New General Secretary

New Chapter Unfolds at GWU: Kevin Camilleri Takes Helm as General Secretary

In the heart of Malta’s capital, Valletta, the General Workers’ Union (GWU) headquarters buzzed with a sense of renewal last week. The union’s executive council approved Kevin Camilleri as the new General Secretary, marking the beginning of a new era for one of Malta’s most influential trade unions.

From Shop Steward to General Secretary

Kevin Camilleri’s journey to the top post at GWU is a testament to his dedication and commitment to the workers’ cause. Starting as a shop steward, Camilleri rose through the ranks, earning the respect and trust of his colleagues. His election as General Secretary is not just a personal victory but also a reflection of the union’s democratic process.

Camilleri takes over from Mario Camilleri (no relation), who held the post for over a decade. Mario Camilleri’s tenure was marked by significant achievements, including the introduction of the Immovable Property Tax (IPT) and the 13th salary. Kevin Camilleri’s appointment signals a continuation of this progressive legacy.

Camilleri’s Vision: Empowering Workers in the New Normal

In his first address to the union, Camilleri outlined his vision for GWU. He emphasized the need to adapt to the ‘new normal,’ particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. “We must ensure that our members’ rights are protected in this ever-changing scene,” he said, “and that their voices are heard in the corridors of power.”

Camilleri also pledged to strengthen GWU’s ties with other trade unions and international bodies. He plans to visit Brussels soon to meet with officials from the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC). “GWU is not an island,” he said, “We must learn from and collaborate with our counterparts abroad.”

Camilleri’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for Malta. The country is grappling with issues like wage stagnation, housing affordability, and the impact of automation on jobs. As General Secretary, Camilleri will be at the forefront of these debates, advocating for workers’ rights and fair labor practices.
