Kevin Camilleri Elected GWU’s New General Secretary
Malta’s Labour Movement Welcomes a New Face: Kevin Camilleri Elected as GWU’s General Secretary
In the heart of Malta’s bustling Republic Street, the General Workers’ Union (GWU) headquarters buzzed with activity last week. The air was thick with anticipation as union members gathered to cast their votes. The result? A resounding victory for Kevin Camilleri, the new General Secretary-elect.
From Shop Steward to GWU’s Helm
Kevin Camilleri, a seasoned shop steward and union activist, has been making waves in Malta’s labour movement for years. Hailing from the industrial hub of Birkirkara, Camilleri has spent over a decade fighting for workers’ rights, most recently serving as GWU’s Assistant General Secretary. His election as General Secretary, however, marks a significant shift in the union’s leadership.
Camilleri’s victory comes on the heels of a hotly contested election, with veteran unionist Mario Camilleri (no relation) stepping down after two decades at the helm. The younger Camilleri’s win signals a changing of the guard, with a new generation stepping up to navigate Malta’s evolving labour scene.
Camilleri’s Vision: A Union for the 21st Century
So, what does Kevin Camilleri’s victory mean for Malta’s workers? In a word: change. Camilleri has promised to modernize the GWU, making it more responsive to the needs of today’s workers. This includes everything from updating the union’s digital presence to forging new partnerships with international labour organizations.
“We’re living in a rapidly changing world,” Camilleri told Hot Malta in an exclusive interview. “Malta’s workers deserve a union that’s as dynamic and forward-thinking as they are.”
Camilleri’s priorities also include tackling Malta’s growing income inequality and advocating for better working conditions in sectors like hospitality and construction. With the tourism industry booming and Malta’s economy humming along, Camilleri sees an opportunity to improve workers’ lives.
“Malta’s success story is a testament to the hard work of its people,” Camilleri said. “It’s time their efforts are reflected in their paychecks and working conditions.”
