Kevin Camilleri: GWU’s New General Secretary
Local Lad Takes Helm at GWU
Imagine the bustling streets of Ħamrun, the heart of Malta’s industrial sector, where the General Workers’ Union (GWU) has stood tall for over a century. Today, a new face takes the reins as Kevin Camilleri is approved as the union’s new General Secretary. But who is this man set to steer one of Malta’s most influential labour organisations?
From Ħamrun to the Helm
Kevin Camilleri is no stranger to the GWU. Born and bred in Ħamrun, he’s been a part of the union’s fabric since his early days in the workforce. A former shop steward, Camilleri has climbed the ranks, earning the trust of his peers and superiors alike. His appointment is not just a testament to his dedication but also a reflection of the GWU’s commitment to nurturing local talent.
“I’ve seen Kevin grow within the union,” says Joe Gasan, outgoing General Secretary. “He’s passionate, dedicated, and understands the pulse of our members. He’s the right man to lead GWU into the future.”
Charting a New Course for GWU
Camilleri takes over at a time when the labour scene is evolving. With the gig economy on the rise and automation threatening traditional jobs, the GWU faces new challenges. But Camilleri is ready. “We’re living in a new world of work,” he says. “But our principles remain the same – fair wages, safe working conditions, and dignity for all workers.”
His priorities? Strengthening ties with international labour organisations, advocating for better work-life balance, and ensuring that no worker is left behind in Malta’s economic growth. “We’re not just fighting for better wages,” Camilleri says. “We’re fighting for a better quality of life for all Maltese workers.”
Camilleri’s appointment is not just a change of guard at the GWU. It’s a testament to Malta’s democratic labour movement, where leadership is earned, not bestowed. It’s a story of Ħamrun lad making good, ready to make a difference. And it’s a promise of a new chapter in the GWU’s century-old history.
“I’m honoured to serve the workers of Malta,” Camilleri says. “I look forward to working with our members, listening to their concerns, and fighting for their rights. Together, we’ll build a stronger, fairer Malta for all.”
