Kevin Camilleri: GWU’s New Voice
Kevin Camilleri: The New Voice of Malta’s Workers
At the General Workers’ Union (GWU) headquarters in Marsa, a new chapter unfolds. Kevin Camilleri, a familiar face in Malta’s trade union scene, has been approved as the new General Secretary. The GWU, one of Malta’s largest and oldest trade unions, is set to be steered by a man known for his dynamism and commitment to workers’ rights.
From Shop Steward to General Secretary
Camilleri’s journey to the top is a testament to his dedication and passion. Starting as a shop steward in the hotel and restaurant sector, he climbed the ranks, becoming GWU’s vice-president in 2018. His rise is a story of hard work, perseverance, and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by Malta’s workers.
Born and raised in Żabbar, Camilleri is no stranger to the struggles of the average Maltese. His roots in the industrial heartland of the island have shaped his perspective on workers’ rights and the need for collective bargaining power.
Camilleri’s Vision for GWU
Camilleri’s vision for GWU is one of empowerment and modernization. He plans to harness technology to better serve the union’s members, making the GWU more accessible and responsive to their needs. He also aims to strengthen ties with other trade unions and civil society organizations, fostering a spirit of solidarity and collective action.
In an interview with Hot Malta, Camilleri outlined his plans: “We need to ensure that our members’ voices are heard loud and clear. We’ll be using digital platforms to engage with our members, to understand their concerns, and to advocate for their rights. We’re living in the 21st century, and our union needs to reflect that.”
Challenges Ahead
Camilleri takes the helm at a time of significant change. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought rare challenges to Malta’s economy and its workers. The GWU, under Camilleri’s leadership, will need to navigate these challenges and advocate for the rights of workers in the new normal.
Camilleri is aware of the task ahead. “These are challenging times,” he says, “but I’m ready to face them head-on. I’m committed to fighting for better working conditions, fair wages, and dignity for all workers. That’s what the GWU is about, and that’s what I stand for.”
As Camilleri steps into his new role, Malta’s workers are watching with hope. They see in him a leader who understands their struggles, who is committed to their cause, and who is ready to lead them into the future.
