Malta’s Diving Community Mourns as Two Italians Lost at Sea in Maldives

Malta’s diving community is in mourning following the tragic news that two Italian divers have lost their lives in the Maldives. The bodies of the two men, identified as 32-year-old Marco and 28-year-old Alessandro, were recovered by local authorities yesterday, bringing an end to a week-long search operation.

Malta’s Connection to the Tragedy

Both men were experienced divers and had been living in Malta for the past few years, working at popular diving schools in St. Julian’s and Cirkewwa. They had traveled to the Maldives for a diving holiday, only for the trip to turn into a nightmare when they failed to resurface after a dive in the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.

“They were passionate about diving and loved exploring new waters,” said a colleague who wished to remain anonymous. “We’re all shocked and saddened by this news. Our thoughts are with their families.”

Search and Rescue Efforts

The search and rescue operation was launched last Tuesday, with local authorities in the Maldives, assisted by the Italian Navy, scouring the area where the men were last seen. Despite their best efforts, it wasn’t until last Thursday that the bodies were finally recovered.

“It’s a tragic reminder of the risks we take when we venture into the deep,” said Malta’s Minister for Gozo and Local Government, Justyne Caruana. “Our thoughts are with the families of these two young men, and we extend our condolences to the Maltese-Italian community.”

Safety First: A Reminder for Divers

While diving incidents are rare in Malta, this tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of safety when underwater. “Always dive with a buddy, never hold your breath, and always plan your dive and dive your plan,” said a spokesperson for the Malta Underwater Federation.

In light of this tragedy, many diving schools in Malta have organized safety briefings and refresher courses for their divers. “We want to ensure that everyone who steps into the water with us is as safe as possible,” said the spokesperson.
