Malta Mourns Loss of Two Divers in Maldives
Malta’s Diving Community Mourns as Two Italians Lost at Sea in Maldives
Malta’s diving community is in mourning following the tragic news that two Italian divers, both experienced and well-known in local circles, have been found dead in the Maldives. The bodies of Andrea Colombo and Matteo Tognon were recovered on Tuesday, over a week after they went missing during a dive in the Indian Ocean archipelago.
Who Were Andrea and Matteo?
Andrea Colombo, a 42-year-old from Milan, and Matteo Tognon, a 39-year-old from Venice, were seasoned divers with a passion for underwater photography. Both men had been frequent visitors to Malta, drawn by its crystal-clear waters and diverse marine life. They were regulars at local diving hotspots like Cirkewwa and the Blue Hole in Gozo, often sharing their stunning underwater images on social media.
“They were always smiling, always eager to share their love for diving,” recalls Mario, a fellow diver who often accompanied them on dives around Malta. “It’s a terrible loss for our community.”
What Happened in the Maldives?
Andrea and Matteo were on a diving trip in the Maldives when they went missing on August 12. They were part of a group that had been exploring the remote Fotteyo Kandu channel. Despite an extensive search and rescue operation involving local authorities and other divers, they were not found until August 20.
According to the Maldives Police Service, the bodies were discovered by a passing boat in the same area where they were last seen. The cause of death is yet to be determined, but local authorities have ruled out foul play.
Reactions from Malta’s Diving Community
News of their deaths has through Malta’s diving community. Dive centers across the island have been paying tribute to the two men, with many organizing moments of silence and memorial dives in their honor.
“We’re all in shock,” says Lisa, a dive instructor at a popular Malta dive center. “They were part of our family, and now they’re gone. It’s a stark reminder of the risks we take, but also of the joy diving brings us.”
Malta’s Minister for Tourism, Dr. Clayton Bartolo, has also expressed his condolences. “Our thoughts are with the families and friends of Andrea and Matteo. We’ve lost two members of our diving community, but their love for the sea and their passion for underwater photography will live on.”
Safety First: A Reminder for Divers
While diving can be a thrilling and rewarding hobby, it’s important to remember that it also comes with inherent risks. Both Andrea and Matteo were experienced divers, yet tragedy struck. This serves as a reminder for all divers to always prioritize safety.
“Check your equipment, dive within your limits, and never hesitate to call a dive if something doesn’t feel right,” advises Mario. “That’s the best way we can honor Andrea and Matteo – by ensuring we come back safe from every dive.”
Malta’s diving community is planning a memorial dive in Andrea and Matteo’s honor, with details to be announced soon. In the meantime, flags at dive centers across the island fly at half-mast, a somber reminder of the loss of two passionate divers.
