Malta’s Cultural Calendar: A Week of Vibrant Events (May 18-24, 2026)

It’s Monday morning in Malta, and the sun is already painting the historic streets of Valletta in hues of gold. As you sip your coffee at Caffè Torrefazione, you can’t help but wonder, “What’s in store for this week?” Well, buckle up, because Malta and Gozo have a week filled with vibrant events lined up for you.

Art in the Spotlight: The Malta Art Biennale

The week kicks off with the Malta Art Biennale, now in its fifth edition. This prestigious event is transforming the island into an open-air gallery, with exhibitions and installations scattered across Valletta, Mdina, and even the quaint streets of Rabat in Gozo. From the contemporary art showcase at the Museum of Modern Art to the thought-provoking installations at the St. John’s Co-Cathedral, art enthusiasts are spoilt for choice.

Don’t miss the ‘Art in the City’ initiative, where local artists will be creating live art pieces in public spaces. On Saturday, head to the Valletta Green Zone for the grand finale, a spectacular light and sound show that will illuminate the capital’s skyline.

Music under the Stars: The Malta International Music Festival

From art to music, the Malta International Music Festival is back, bringing together world-class musicians for a week of enchanting performances. This year’s edition features a symphony orchestra conducted by the renowned Maestro Stephen Bell, with soloists including the award-winning pianist, Alexander Malter.

Catch the opening concert on Tuesday at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta, or enjoy the free outdoor concerts at the Teatru Astra in Victoria, Gozo. The festival culminates in a grand finale at the Manoel Theatre on Saturday.

Food, Glorious Food: The Gozo Food & Drink Festival

As the sun sets on Saturday, make your way to the sister island of Gozo for the annual Food & Drink Festival. The historic Citadel in Victoria will come alive with the tantalizing aromas of local delicacies, from traditional Gozitan ‘ftira’ to the moreish ‘pastizzi’.

Indulge in a gastronomic journey as you sample local produce, watch live cooking demonstrations, and enjoy performances by local artists. And don’t forget to raise a glass of local wine or craft beer to toast another fantastic week in Malta and Gozo.
