Malta’s Dive Community Mourns: Two Italians Lost in Maldives

Malta’s dive community is in mourning following the tragic news that two Italian divers have lost their lives in the Maldives. The bodies of the two men, both experienced divers, were recovered yesterday, according to an official statement from the Maldivian authorities.

Who Were the Victims?

The victims have been identified as Marco Rossi, 38, and Luca Bianchi, 42, both from Milan. They were part of a group of divers who had been exploring the pristine waters of the Maldives for the past week. Rossi was a renowned underwater photographer, while Bianchi was a seasoned dive instructor with over a decade of experience.

What Happened?

The incident occurred on Tuesday, when the two men went on a deep dive in the Vaadhoo Channel, known for its rich marine life and strong currents. Despite their experience, the divers failed to resurface on time, prompting a search and rescue operation by the Maldivian Navy. Their bodies were found late yesterday afternoon, some 30 meters apart.

According to the official statement, the divers were not using dive computers, which could have helped track their depth and time. The Maldivian authorities have since reminded all divers to adhere to safety guidelines, including the use of dive computers and staying within the recommended depth limits.

Reaction from Malta’s Dive Community

News of the tragedy has through Malta’s tight-knit dive community. “It’s a sad day for all of us,” said Mario Azzopardi, a dive instructor at the popular dive centre, Dive Malta, based in St. Julian’s. “Marco and Luca were not just experienced divers, they were our friends. We’re all struggling to come to terms with this loss.”

Many divers have taken to social media to pay tribute to the two men, sharing stories of their bravery, skill, and passion for the sport. A minute’s silence was observed at dive centres across the island today, with divers gathering at the steps leading down to the sea in Sliema.

Safety First: A Reminder for Divers

While the cause of the incident is still under investigation, the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety in diving. “We all know the risks, but sometimes we let our enthusiasm get the better of us,” said Azzopardi. “This is a wake-up call. We need to prioritize safety, not just for ourselves, but for our dive buddies too.”

Malta’s dive community is now calling for stricter enforcement of safety guidelines, including mandatory use of dive computers and regular safety briefings. “We’ve lost two of our own,” said Azzopardi. “Let’s make sure their loss wasn’t in vain.”

The Maldivian authorities have assured the Italian embassy that they will continue to investigate the incident, with a view to preventing similar tragedies in the future. Meanwhile, Malta’s dive community is planning a memorial dive in memory of Rossi and Bianchi, to be held off the coast of St. Peter’s Pool next weekend.

“We dive to explore the beauty of the underwater world, but we must never forget that it’s a dangerous place,” said Azzopardi. “Let’s honor Marco and Luca by diving safely, and by spreading the word about the importance of safety in our sport.”
