Malta’s Eco-Innovators: Upcycled Towels & Hearing Tech Bag Top Entrepreneurship Prize

Imagine this: a bustling classroom at the University of Malta, filled with the hum of excitement and the whir of innovative ideas. Among the crowd, two teams stand out, their creations set to make waves in the local business scene. One, transforming old towels into stylish, eco-friendly fashion accessories. The other, revolutionizing hearing aid technology. This is the story of Malta’s latest student entrepreneurship triumph.

From Beach Towels to Fashion Statements

Meet ‘Towel & Textile Upcycling’, the brainchild of three University of Malta students – Maria, Alex, and Daniel. Their journey began when they noticed the piles of old towels discarded by local hotels and beachgoers. Instead of letting them gather dust, they decided to breathe new life into them. The result? A vibrant collection of upcycled towels, bags, and other accessories, now available at their store in Valletta’s Merkanti Craft Market.

“We wanted to create something unique, sustainable, and beneficial to our community,” says Maria. “By upcycling old towels, we’re reducing textile waste and promoting a greener Malta.” Their creations, each one a testament to their commitment to the environment, have caught the eye of both locals and tourists.

Hearing the Call for Innovation

Another team making waves is ‘HearMe’, led by engineering students, Sarah and Michael. Their mission? To make hearing aids more accessible, comfortable, and technologically advanced. Their innovative design, a discreet, behind-the-ear device with Bluetooth connectivity, has already garnered praise from audiologists and potential users.

“We’ve seen firsthand the challenges faced by people with hearing loss,” says Michael. “Our aim is to create a device that’s not just effective, but also stylish and user-friendly.” With a prototype ready and a production plan in the works, HearMe is set to revolutionize the local hearing aid market.

Winning the Malta Student Entrepreneurship Prize

Both teams recently bagged the top prize at the Malta Student Entrepreneurship Awards, organized by the University of Malta’s Junior Chamber of Commerce. The award, along with a €5,000 grant, will help them grow their businesses and make their mark on Malta’s entrepreneurial scene.

“This win is a testament to the power of innovation and sustainability,” says Alex, one of the towel upcycling trio. “We’re excited to use this opportunity to expand our business and create more eco-friendly products.”

For Sarah and Michael, the award is a validation of their hard work and a stepping stone towards their goal. “Winning this prize has given us the boost we needed to take HearMe to the next level,” says Sarah. “We’re looking forward to making a real difference in the lives of people with hearing loss.”

As these young entrepreneurs continue to make their mark, one thing is clear: Malta’s future is in good hands. Their innovative, sustainable, and community-focused ideas are not just winning awards; they’re also shaping a greener, more inclusive Malta.
