Malta’s GWU Welcomes New Era with Kevin Camilleri

Malta’s Trade Union Scene Shifts as Kevin Camilleri Takes Helm at GWU

In the heart of Malta’s capital, Valletta, the General Workers’ Union (GWU) headquarters buzzed with a different energy today. The union’s members and officials gathered, not just for another meeting, but to witness history in the making. Kevin Camilleri, a name familiar to many in Malta’s trade union scene, was officially approved as the new General Secretary.

A New Chapter Unfolds

Camilleri, a 41-year-old lawyer, steps into the role vacated by Mario Camilleri (no relation), who served as General Secretary for over two decades. The shift marks a generational change at the helm of one of Malta’s largest and most influential trade unions.

Born and raised in Birkirkara, Kevin Camilleri is no stranger to the union’s inner workings. He has been an active member of GWU for over a decade, serving as the union’s legal consultant and representing workers’ rights in various sectors. His appointment comes at a time when the union is facing new challenges, from the gig economy to the impact of automation on traditional jobs.

A Fresh Perspective

Camilleri’s legal background brings a unique perspective to the role. “I’ve seen firsthand the struggles of workers, the complexities of employment laws, and the need for a strong voice to advocate for their rights,” he said in an interview with Hot Malta. “I’m eager to bring this perspective to the table and drive positive change for our members.”

His appointment was met with enthusiasm by many GWU members. “Kevin has always been approachable and understanding of our needs,” said a worker from the manufacturing sector who wished to remain anonymous. “I think he’ll bring a fresh perspective to the union and help us navigate these changing times.”

Camilleri’s priorities are clear: to strengthen the union’s presence in the digital age, to advocate for better working conditions and wages, and to ensure that workers’ rights are protected in the face of new challenges. “We’re living in a time of rapid change,” he said. “It’s crucial that our union evolves with it, to ensure that we continue to serve our members effectively.”

As Camilleri takes the reins, the future of Malta’s trade union scene seems poised for a shift. With a new generation at the helm, the GWU looks set to tackle the challenges of the 21st century, from its headquarters in the heart of Valletta.
