Malta’s Rural Pathways Safe: Court Upholds Protection
Ever felt the joy of a leisurely stroll along Malta’s rural pathways, with the sun warming your back and the scent of wild thyme filling the air? Well, you can breathe easy, because those paths are here to stay.
Court Upholds Rural Pathways’ Protection
The Maltese courts have delivered a victory for nature lovers and environmentalists alike. In a recent ruling, the Court of Appeal confirmed that rural pathways remain protected under Malta’s planning policy, the Planning Authority (PA) regulations.
Paths of History and Culture
Malta’s rural pathways are more than just dirt tracks. They’re living history, connecting us to our past and our culture. They lead to ancient sites, traditional farmhouses, and hidden valleys. Take the Dingli Cliffs pathway, for instance. It winds past the iconic Clapham Junction, offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, and leads to the neolithic Mnajdra Temples.
Planning Policy in the Spotlight
The court case centered around the PA’s interpretation of Policy GP2.1.2, which states that rural pathways should be protected and enhanced. The PA had argued that this policy didn’t apply to all rural pathways, but the court disagreed, upholding the policy’s broad interpretation.
“This ruling is a clear message to the PA and developers,” says Dr. Simon Mercieca, an environmental lawyer. “It’s not just about preserving the countryside’s beauty, but also its cultural heritage and the public’s right to access it.”
: Pathways to the Future
With this ruling, Malta’s rural pathways are safer, but the fight isn’t over. Environmental groups are calling for better maintenance and signposting of these paths. They’re also urging the public to use and appreciate them, to ensure their continued protection.
“We need to cherish and promote our rural pathways,” says Dr. Mercieca. “They’re not just for hikers and nature lovers. They’re for everyone who wants to connect with Malta’s past and present.”
