Malta’s Upcycled Towel & Hearing Tech Startups Win Big
From Beach to Boardroom: Upcycled Towels & Hearing Tech Bag Top Student Entrepreneurship Prize
Imagine this: a beach towel, weathered by sun and sea, ready to be discarded. Now, picture it transformed into a stylish, eco-friendly bag, winning over judges and bagging the top prize at Malta’s prestigious Student Entrepreneurship Awards. This is the reality for two local students, who’ve turned waste into winners.
Waste Not, Want Not: Upcycling on the Rise
Meet Maria and Lisa, final-year students at the University of Malta, who’ve turned their passion for sustainability into a thriving business, Beach2Bag. Their secret? Upcycling old beach towels into trendy, durable bags. “We saw so many towels being thrown away after just one season,” says Maria. “We thought, why not give them a new life?”
Based in their humble garage in Birkirkara, the duo has been turning heads and reducing waste since they launched last year. Their unique designs, featuring vibrant prints and sturdy, eco-friendly materials, have caught the eye of both locals and tourists. You can find their creations at the Mosta Market on Sundays or online.
Hear Here: Innovative Hearing Tech Takes the Stage
While Maria and Lisa were busy revolutionising the fashion scene, another pair of students was making waves in the tech world. David and Matthew, both studying Electrical Engineering, have developed an innovative hearing aid that’s set to change lives. Their device, AudEase, is not only affordable but also discreet and customisable.
“We wanted to create a hearing aid that’s not just functional, but also comfortable and stylish,” explains David. “Something that people would actually want to wear.” With AudEase, users can adjust volume and settings via a smartphone app, and the device’s sleek design ensures it’s barely noticeable.
Student Entrepreneurship Awards: A Night of Triumphs
Both Beach2Bag and AudEase were among the winners at this year’s Student Entrepreneurship Awards, held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta. The event, organised by the Malta Council for Science and Technology, celebrated the best and brightest student entrepreneurs from across the island.
The judges were won over by the innovation, sustainability, and market potential of both ventures. Beach2Bag took home the top prize of €5,000, while AudEase was awarded €3,000. But the real win? Seeing their ideas come to life and make a difference in their community.
“This is just the beginning,” says Lisa, beaming. “We can’t wait to see where this journey takes us.”
Malta’s Entrepreneurial Spirit: A Bright Future Ahead
As the sun sets on another successful Student Entrepreneurship Awards, one thing’s clear: Malta’s entrepreneurial spirit is stronger than ever. From upcycled towels to innovative hearing tech, our students are proving that there’s no challenge too big, no idea too small.
So, what’s next for these young entrepreneurs? Maria and Lisa are expanding their product range, while David and Matthew are working on a pilot project with the Malta Association of the Deaf. As for the rest of us? Let’s keep supporting, inspiring, and investing in our local talent. Because when our students succeed, Malta succeeds.
“Malta is a small island, but our ideas are big,” says Matthew. “And together, we can make them even bigger.”
