Malta’s Zach Vella Completes Epic London-Malta Run for Homeless
From London to Malta: Zach Vella’s Marathon of Hope
Imagine pounding the pavement for 1,800 kilometers, your feet carrying you through six countries, all the way from the bustling streets of London to the sun-kissed shores of Malta. This wasn’t just a run for Zach Vella; it was a marathon of hope, a journey to raise awareness and funds for Malta’s homeless community.
Setting Off: London to Paris
Zach, a 32-year-old Maltese endurance athlete, began his epic run on September 1st, 2021. He started in London, his eyes fixed on the Eiffel Tower, his first major milestone. The streets of Paris welcomed him after 450 kilometers, cheering him on as he passed the iconic landmark. But Zach wasn’t just running for the thrill; he was running for a cause.
“I’ve seen firsthand the struggles of Malta’s homeless community,” Zach says, his voice echoing the determination in his stride. “I wanted to do something, anything, to make a difference.”
Through France and Switzerland
From Paris, Zach ran through the French countryside, his path taking him through Lyon and Marseille. He crossed into Switzerland, the Alps looming large in the distance. Each step was a challenge, but Zach pushed on, fueled by the thought of the people he was running for.
In Geneva, he was met by Maltese expats who joined him for a few kilometers, their support a reminder of the home he was running towards. “It was emotional,” Zach recalls. “It made me realize that I wasn’t just running for the people in Malta, but for the Maltese community everywhere.”
Across Italy and the Final Stretch
Zach’s journey took him through Italy, his route passing through Turin and Milan. He ran through the Apennine Mountains, their peaks a stark contrast to the Mediterranean Sea he knew awaited him in Malta.
Finally, after 1,800 kilometers and 75 days, Zach reached the finish line in Valletta. The Grandmaster’s Palace stood tall behind him, a symbol of Malta’s rich history, as he completed his marathon of hope. The streets were lined with supporters, their cheers a testament to Zach’s incredible feat.
“When I saw the Three Cities across the Grand Harbour, I knew I was almost home,” Zach says, a smile in his voice. “It was the most incredible feeling.”
Making a Difference
Zach’s run raised €25,000 for Dar Merħba Biss, a non-profit organization that supports Malta’s homeless community. The funds will go towards providing food, clothing, and shelter to those in need.
“Zach’s run is a perfect example of how one person can make a difference,” says Maria Attard, the director of Dar Merħba Biss. “His dedication and determination have not only raised vital funds but also raised awareness about the issue of homelessness in Malta.”
Zach’s journey may be over, but his mission continues. He encourages everyone to support Dar Merħba Biss and to never underestimate the power of one person to make a difference.
“I ran 1,800 kilometers, but the real work starts now,” Zach says. “It’s up to all of us to continue supporting those in need and to work towards a future where no one is left without a home.”
