Malta’s Zach Vella Completes Epic London-Malta Run for Homeless

Zach Vella’s Marathon of Hope: From London to Malta for the Homeless

Imagine, if you will, the bustling streets of London. It’s a chilly January morning, and among the hurried commuters, one figure stands out. Zach Vella, a Maltese man with a mission, is about to embark on an epic journey that will span over 1,800 kilometers and 60 days. His destination? The sunny shores of Malta. But this isn’t just any trek; Zach is running to raise awareness and funds for the homeless.

From the Streets of London to the Streets of Malta

Zach’s journey began on January 15th, 2023, at the iconic Tower Bridge in London. With a backpack filled with essentials and a heart full of determination, he set off, averaging around 30 kilometers a day. His route took him through France, Switzerland, Italy, and finally, across the Mediterranean to his beloved Malta.

As he ran, Zach’s story gained traction. Strangers became friends, offering him a place to rest, a meal to share, or simply a word of encouragement. In each country, he was met with kindness and support, a testament to the power of human connection and the universal language of compassion.

Malta Welcomes Its Hero

Sixty days later, on March 17th, Zach’s journey came full circle as he stepped foot on Maltese soil. A crowd of well-wishers greeted him at the Mgarr Ferry Terminal in Gozo, cheering and clapping as he crossed the finish line. The emotional reunion was a poignant reminder of the love and support that had carried him across continents.

But Zach’s journey wasn’t just about the distance he covered. It was about the cause he championed. “I wanted to do something meaningful,” he says, “something that could make a real difference in the lives of those less fortunate.”

Running for a Cause: Malta’s Homeless Community

According to Malta’s Housing Authority, there are over 1,000 people currently on the waiting list for social housing. The problem is exacerbated by the high cost of living and the scarcity of affordable housing. Zach’s run aimed to shed light on this issue and raise funds for local homeless charities.

Through his campaign, “Run for the Homeless,” Zach has raised thousands of euros for organizations like Dar Merħba Biss, which provides accommodation and support to homeless individuals. His efforts have not only provided much-needed resources but also sparked conversations about homelessness in Malta.

“We need to talk about homelessness,” Zach says, “We need to understand it, address it, and most importantly, show compassion to those experiencing it.”

Zach’s journey may have ended, but his mission continues. He encourages everyone to get involved, whether it’s by donating to local charities, volunteering, or simply showing kindness to those in need.

“We all have the power to make a difference,” he says, “It’s up to us to use that power to create a kinder, more compassionate world.”

As for Zach, he’s already planning his next challenge. But for now, he’s content to rest, reflect, and revel in the knowledge that he’s made a real difference.
