Malta’s Zach Vella Completes Epic London-Malta Run for Homeless
From London to Malta: Zach Vella’s Marathon of Hope
Imagine, if you will, the sight of a lone runner, drenched in sweat and determination, pounding the tarmac under the watchful gaze of the Tower Bridge. This was not just another jogger; this was Zach Vella, embarking on an epic journey that would span over 1,800 miles and culminate in the sunny streets of Malta. His mission? To raise awareness and funds for the homeless.
An Idea Takes Shape
Zach, a 32-year-old Maltese expat living in London, was inspired to take on this monumental challenge after volunteering at a homeless shelter. “I saw firsthand the struggles these people face,” he says. “I wanted to do something that would make a difference.” And so, the idea of running from London to Malta was born.
With a route mapped out that would take him through France, Switzerland, Italy, and finally, the Mediterranean island of Malta, Zach set off in late March. His goal? To complete the journey in under 60 days and raise €10,000 for local homeless charities.
Malta’s Support Along the Way
Back home in Malta, the news of Zach’s endeavor spread like wildfire. Local businesses and individuals rallied behind him, offering support and sponsorship. “It’s been incredible,” Zach says. “Knowing that people back home believe in what I’m doing has kept me going on some of the toughest days.”
From the comfort of their homes, Maltese followers tracked Zach’s progress on social media, cheering him on with every update. The Malta Tourism Authority even stepped in to help, providing Zach with a place to rest and recover in the historic city of Mdina once he reached the island.
Crossing the Finish Line
After 59 grueling days, Zach finally set foot on Maltese soil. A crowd of well-wishers greeted him at the finish line in Valletta’s City Gate, their cheers echoing off the ancient stone walls. “I can’t believe I’ve done it,” Zach gasped, tears streaming down his face. “But this is just the beginning. The real work starts now.”
With the support of local charities like Dar tal-Providenza and St. Vincent de Paul, Zach plans to use the funds raised to provide immediate relief to Malta’s homeless population. His ultimate goal? To help build a sustainable, long-term solution to homelessness in Malta.
As for Zach, he’s taking a well-deserved rest. But he’s already hinting at his next challenge. “I’ve got a few ideas,” he says with a mischievous grin. “But for now, I’m just going to enjoy being home.”
