Malta’s Zach Vella Completes Epic London-Malta Run for Homeless

Zach Vella: From London to Malta, One Step at a Time for the Homeless

Imagine pounding the pavement for 1,500 miles, your feet blistered, muscles aching, yet your spirit unbroken. This was the reality for Zach Vella, a Malta-based runner who recently completed an epic journey from London to his home island, all in aid of the homeless.

An Unyielding Determination

Zach set off from the British capital on September 1, 2021, with a singular goal: to raise awareness and funds for Malta’s homeless population. He ran an average of 30 miles a day, traversing countries, crossing seas, and facing countless challenges. But Zach’s determination never wavered. “I knew I had to keep going,” he says, “not just for myself, but for those who needed my help.”

His journey took him through France, Switzerland, Italy, and finally, a ferry ride to his beloved Malta. On November 28, after 109 days on the road, Zach crossed the finish line at the iconic Mnajdra Temples in Qrendi, greeted by cheering supporters and the sweet taste of victory.

Malta’s Homeless Crisis: A Local Perspective

Malta, with its Mediterranean charm and bustling streets, often hides a darker side. According to the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector, around 150 people are homeless on the island on any given night. Zach’s run aimed to shed light on this often-ignored issue and raise funds for local charities like Dar Merħba Bik and St. Martin’s Institute.

Zach’s run resonated with locals. “I’ve had people stop me on the street, share their stories, and thank me for raising awareness,” he says. “It’s been an emotional journey, but it’s made me realize just how much support there is for this cause.”

From the Streets of London to the Heart of Malta

Zach’s run was more than just a physical feat; it was a testament to human resilience and the power of community. Along the way, he was met with kindness and generosity. Strangers offered him food, shelter, and words of encouragement. In Malta, his family, friends, and even strangers cheered him on, their support echoing through the narrow streets of Valletta and the quiet lanes of Zebbug.

“Malta is my home,” Zach says, “and I wanted to do something that would make a real difference here. I hope my run has inspired others to stand up for those in need.”

As Zach’s epic journey comes to an end, his message continues to resonate. His run has raised over €10,000 for Malta’s homeless, a testament to the power of one person’s determination to make a difference. And as Zach looks to the future, he’s already planning his next challenge, ready to take on the world, one step at a time.

“I’ve proven that one person can make a difference,” Zach says, “and I’m not done yet. Watch this space.”
