Malta’s Zach Vella Completes Epic Run for Homeless
Malta’s Zach Vella: From London Streets to Our Shores, Running for a Cause
Imagine pounding the pavement, not for a medal or a personal best, but to make a difference. That’s exactly what Maltese athlete Zach Vella did, completing an epic 1,800km run from London to Malta, all in aid of the homeless. His journey ended at the iconic Mnajdra Temples in Qrendi, where he was greeted by cheering supporters and a sense of accomplishment that transcended mere physical endurance.
From Idea to Reality
Zach’s journey began as a spark of an idea, fueled by his desire to make a tangible difference. “I’ve always been passionate about running and helping others,” he says, “So, I thought, why not combine the two?” He chose to support the Malta Community Chest Fund, which supports various local charities, including those helping the homeless.
With a route mapped out, Zach set off from London’s Tower Bridge on October 1, 2021. He ran an average of 60km a day, through rain, wind, and even snow, crossing through France, Switzerland, and Italy before finally reaching Malta on November 13.
Malta’s Support Along the Way
Zach’s journey wasn’t just a personal feat; it was a testament to the power of community support. Along the way, he was met with kindness and generosity, from strangers offering him a place to rest to Maltese expats cheering him on. “The Maltese community abroad has been incredible,” Zach says, “They’ve followed my journey, donated, and spread the word.”
Back home, Maltese businesses and individuals also chipped in. Local running clubs joined him for parts of his journey, and businesses like GSD Marketing and Communications and Hili Ventures sponsored his run. “The support has been overwhelming,” Zach says, “It’s made this journey so much more than just a run.”
More Than Just a Run
Zach’s run raised over €15,000 for the Malta Community Chest Fund. But the impact goes beyond the monetary. It sparked conversations about homelessness, inspired others to take action, and highlighted the power of community support.
“This run was about more than just the distance,” Zach says, “It was about showing that we can all make a difference, no matter how big or small. It’s about compassion, resilience, and community.”
As Zach stood at Mnajdra Temples, the sun setting behind him, he wasn’t just a runner who had completed an extraordinary feat. He was a symbol of hope, a testament to what can be achieved when we come together for a cause.
And as for what’s next? Zach is already planning his next challenge. “I’m not sure what it is yet,” he says, “But I know it will be another way to give back, to inspire, and to make a difference.”
