Malta’s Zach Vella Completes Epic Run for Homeless
Zach Vella’s Marathon of Hope: From London to Malta for the Homeless
Imagine running 1,800 kilometers, not for a medal, but to make a difference. That’s exactly what Maltese athlete Zach Vella accomplished, completing an epic journey from London to his hometown of Malta, all in aid of the homeless. His feat, dubbed ‘Run for the Homeless’, captured the hearts of locals and internationals alike, raising awareness and funds for a cause close to home.
From London to Valletta: A Journey of Endurance
Zach’s journey began on October 1st, 2021, in the heart of London. With a backpack filled with essentials and a heart full of determination, he set off, averaging an astonishing 40 kilometers a day. He traversed through France, Switzerland, Italy, and finally, across the Mediterranean to his beloved Malta.
His route took him through picturesque landscapes and bustling cities, but it was the Maltese coastline that brought a lump to his throat. “Seeing the Maltese islands from the ferry was emotional,” Zach recounted. “I knew I was almost home, and the support from Maltese people along the way had been incredible.”
On December 15th, after 76 days and 1,800 kilometers, Zach completed his marathon in front of the historic City Gate in Valletta, Malta’s capital city. The sight of the iconic Auberge de Castille, a symbol of Maltese history, must have been a poignant moment for Zach, knowing he had achieved his goal.
More Than Just a Run: Raising Awareness and Funds
Zach’s run was more than just a physical challenge; it was a mission to raise awareness and funds for Dar Merħba Bik, a local charity supporting the homeless. “I’ve seen firsthand the struggles of the homeless,” Zach explained. “I wanted to do something to help, and this run seemed like the perfect way to raise awareness and funds.”
Through his ‘Run for the Homeless’ campaign, Zach raised over €10,000 for Dar Merħba Bik. The funds will go towards providing food, shelter, and support services to those in need. “Every euro counts,” said Joe Mifsud, a representative from Dar Merħba Bik. “Zach’s run has not only raised funds but also awareness about the issue of homelessness in Malta.”
Inspiring a Nation: The Power of One
Zach’s journey has inspired many in Malta and beyond. His story is a testament to what one person can achieve when driven by passion and purpose. “I’m just an ordinary person who wanted to make a difference,” Zach humbly stated. “If my run can inspire others to help those in need, then it was all worth it.”
Zach’s run also highlighted the power of community. From strangers offering him a place to stay and meals along the way to the outpouring of support on social media, Zach’s journey was a testament to the kindness of humanity.
As Zach’s feet healed and his body recovered, his spirit remained unbroken. He plans to continue supporting Dar Merħba Bik and other local charities, proving that every step, no matter how small, can make a difference.
When asked about his next challenge, Zach simply smiled, “Who knows? Maybe next time, I’ll run to the moon and back.”
