Malta’s Zach Vella Completes Epic Run for Homeless

Zach Vella: From London to Malta, One Step at a Time for the Homeless

Imagine, if you will, the bustling streets of London, the city’s iconic red buses rumbling by, and in the midst of it all, a Maltese man, Zach Vella, setting off on a journey that would span over 1,800 kilometers. His destination? The sunny shores of Malta. But this wasn’t just any journey; it was a marathon, quite literally, run in aid of the homeless.

An Epic Journey, A Noble Cause

Zach, a 34-year-old former athlete from Msida, embarked on this monumental challenge on October 1st, 2021. His mission? To raise awareness and funds for Dar Merħba Biss, a local charity dedicated to supporting Malta’s homeless community. With each stride, he aimed to bring hope and comfort to those in need.

His route took him through France, Switzerland, Italy, and finally, across the Mediterranean to his beloved Malta. It was a journey filled with physical endurance, mental resilience, and an unwavering commitment to his cause. Zach’s feat is a testament to the power of human determination and the lengths one can go to make a difference.

Malta Welcomes Its Hero

After 78 days and 1,800 kilometers, Zach finally set foot on Maltese soil on December 7th, 2021. His arrival was met with a hero’s welcome at the Valletta Waterfront. Supporters, friends, and family cheered him on, their voices echoing the joy and pride they felt for their fellow countryman.

Zach was greeted by the Minister for Inclusion and Social Wellbeing, Roderick Galdes, who praised his efforts and the attention he had brought to the issue of homelessness. “Zach’s journey is an inspiration to us all,” Minister Galdes said. “It shows that one person can make a real difference in our community.”

More Than Just a Run

Zach’s run was more than just a physical feat; it was a symbol of hope for Malta’s homeless community. His journey raised over €15,000 for Dar Merħba Biss, funds that will go directly towards supporting those in need. But perhaps more importantly, it sparked conversations and raised awareness about an issue that often goes unnoticed.

Zach’s story is a reminder that we all have the power to make a difference, no matter how big or small our actions may seem. It’s a call to look out for our fellow Maltese, to stand up for those who need our help, and to never underestimate the impact of a single step taken in the right direction.

As Zach himself puts it, “This run was about more than just me. It was about every person who has ever struggled, every person who has ever felt alone. It was about showing them that they are not forgotten, that they are not invisible. And it was about showing Malta that we all have a role to play in creating a kinder, more compassionate society.”
