Malta’s Zach Vella Completes Epic Run for Homeless

From London to Malta: Zach Vella’s Marathon of Hope

Imagine running 1,800 kilometers, not for a medal, but to raise awareness and funds for Malta’s homeless. This is exactly what local athlete Zach Vella has accomplished, completing his epic journey from London to his hometown of Malta on Saturday.

The Journey Begins

Zach set off from London’s Tower Bridge on October 1st, with a mission to raise €10,000 for Dar tal-Providenza, a home for people with disabilities, and to shine a light on homelessness. He ran an average of 40 kilometers a day, through rain, wind, and even snow, his determination unwavering.

His route took him through France, Switzerland, Italy, and finally, across the Mediterranean to Malta. Along the way, he was met with overwhelming support, with locals offering him food, shelter, and words of encouragement. “The kindness of strangers has been incredible,” Zach told Hot Malta.

Homecoming

Zach’s journey came to an emotional end at the Dar tal-Providenza in Siġġiewi, where he was greeted by cheering supporters and the residents he had run to help. “To see the smiles on their faces, it’s all worth it,” he said, his voice thick with emotion.

Zach’s feat has not only raised much-needed funds and awareness but has also inspired many. His story has been shared widely on social media, with the hashtag #RunForHope trending locally. “If Zach can run 1,800 kilometers, then we can all do something to help those less fortunate,” said one of his supporters, Maria Attard.

The Impact

Zach’s run has raised over €15,000 for Dar tal-Providenza, surpassing his initial target. The funds will go towards improving the home’s facilities and providing better care for its residents. But perhaps more importantly, Zach’s journey has sparked conversations about homelessness and the need for more support and understanding.

“We need to remember that everyone deserves a place to call home,” Zach said. “I hope my run has reminded people of that.”

Zach’s epic run may be over, but his mission continues. He encourages everyone to find their own way to help, whether it’s volunteering at a local charity or simply showing kindness to those in need.

“We all have the power to make a difference,” he said. “It’s just about finding what works for you.”
