Drugs Seized: Man Arrested in Mdina Road Stop

In the heart of Malta, the historic city of Mdina, a routine traffic stop took an unexpected turn last week. A man, identified as 35-year-old Joseph Xuereb from Birkirkara, was arrested after police discovered a stash of drugs in his vehicle. The bust, which took place on Triq Vilhena, a narrow, cobbled street just off the main square, has the usually quiet city.

Police Action in Mdina

Mdina, known for its rich history and picturesque alleyways, is not typically associated with drug-related incidents. However, the Malta Police Force has been stepping up patrols in the area, following complaints from residents about an increase in suspicious activity. The traffic stop that led to Xuereb’s arrest was part of these enhanced patrols.

“We’re committed to maintaining the safety and security of all Maltese communities, including those living in our historic cities,” said Inspector David Attard, who led the operation. “We’ll continue to monitor the situation in Mdina and take action when necessary.”

Drugs Seized and Charges Laid

During the stop, police found a substantial amount of cannabis and ecstasy in Xuereb’s car. The drugs, with an estimated street value of over €5,000, were seized, and Xuereb was arrested on the spot. He was later charged with possession of a controlled drug and intent to supply, and was remanded in custody pending further investigations.

“The quantity of drugs found suggests that Xuereb was not just a casual user, but was involved in the supply chain,” said a police spokesperson. “We’re treating this as a significant seizure and will continue to investigate to see if there are any links to other criminal activities.”

Reaction from Mdina Residents

News of the arrest has been met with relief and concern from Mdina residents. “We’re glad the police are taking action,” said Maria Azzopardi, a long-time resident of Mdina. “But it’s worrying that this kind of thing is happening in our city. We want Mdina to remain a safe place for everyone.”

Mdina Mayor Dr. Paul Cardona echoed these sentiments. “We’re working closely with the police to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors. We won’t tolerate any criminal activity in our city.”

As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with information about drug-related activities in Mdina or elsewhere in Malta to come forward. “Your tip-offs can make a real difference in our fight against drugs,” said Inspector Attard.
