In an early morning operation, Maltese police intercepted a vehicle near the historic gates of Mdina, leading to the seizure of a significant quantity of drugs and the arrest of a 32-year-old man from Birkirkara.
Police Action in Mdina
Acting on intelligence, a team of police officers stopped the vehicle at around 7:30 AM on Tuesday. The driver, a local man, was cooperative but grew nervous during the routine check. Officers noticed his unease and decided to search the vehicle. Hidden in the boot, they found a stash of suspected cannabis, ready for distribution.
Mdina, the ancient capital of Malta, is no stranger to police patrols. Its narrow streets and historic buildings make it a popular tourist spot, but also a potential hotbed for criminal activity. Today’s incident serves as a reminder that police presence is constant, even in the most picturesque corners of the island.
Drugs and Paraphernalia Seized
The seized drugs weighed approximately 2 kilograms, with an estimated street value of around €20,000. Alongside the cannabis, police also found drug paraphernalia, including scales and baggies, indicating the man’s involvement in drug trafficking.
Inspector Joe Xuereb, leading the operation, commented, “This seizure is a significant blow to local drug networks. We’re committed to keeping Malta’s streets safe, and operations like this demonstrate our resolve.”
Man Charged and Remanded
The man was arrested and taken to the police headquarters in Floriana for further questioning. He was later charged with drug trafficking and possession of drug paraphernalia. The court remanded him in custody pending further investigations.
This incident comes amidst ongoing efforts by Maltese authorities to combat drug trafficking and use on the island. According to the latest statistics, drug-related crimes have seen a slight decrease in recent years, but police remain vigilant, as today’s operation in Mdina underscores.
As Malta continues to grapple with drug-related issues, the public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the police. Together, we can keep our communities safe and drug-free.
