Man Jailed for Breaching Protection Order in Malta
Man Jailed for Defying Court Order, Contacting Ex-Partner in Malta
In a quiet street off Triq San Pawl in Birkirkara, a man found himself in handcuffs this week, not for a petty crime, but for a breach of a court order. The man, a 35-year-old resident of the street, was arrested for repeatedly contacting his former partner despite a protection order banning him from doing so.
Court Order Ignored, Consequences Followed
The man, identified by sources as John Doe, was served with a protection order last year following a heated argument with his then-partner. The order, issued by the Family Court in Floriana, prohibited him from contacting her in any way, including calls, messages, or social media interactions. However, Doe failed to heed the court’s warning, leading to his eventual arrest.
According to Inspector Maria Camilleri of the Birkirkara Police Station, “The court order was clear and explicit. Despite this, Mr. Doe chose to ignore it, putting his personal feelings above the law. We had to intervene to ensure the safety and peace of mind of the victim.”
Breach of Protection Orders: A Growing Concern
Doe’s arrest is part of a growing trend of protection order breaches in Malta. According to statistics from the Malta Police Force, there has been a 15% increase in such cases over the past five years. This worrying trend has led to increased efforts by the police and the Family Court to educate the public about the seriousness of these offenses.
“Protection orders are not suggestions,” said Judge Joseph Mifsud of the Family Court. “They are legal instruments designed to safeguard victims from further harm. Breaching one is not only a criminal offense but also a sign of disrespect for the justice system.”
What Happens Next?
Doe was remanded in custody pending his trial, which is set to begin next month. If found guilty, he faces a prison sentence of up to three years, as well as a fine. His former partner, who wishes to remain anonymous, expressed relief at his arrest. “I hope this serves as a lesson to others who think they can ignore the law,” she said.
In the meantime, the police are urging anyone who feels threatened or harassed by an ex-partner to seek legal advice and, if necessary, apply for a protection order. “We are here to enforce the law and protect victims,” Inspector Camilleri said. “But we also need the public to understand court orders.”
As for Doe, his future hangs in the balance. His actions have not only put him at odds with the law but also caused distress to his former partner. His case serves as a stark reminder that while emotions can run high in the aftermath of a relationship, it’s crucial to respect the boundaries set by the law.
