New Apostolic Nuncio Arrives in Malta
New Apostolic Nuncio Mgr Wojciech Załuski: A Fresh Face at the Vatican’s Malta Embassy
As the sun set over the Grand Harbour, a new figure arrived on Malta’s shores. Mgr Wojciech Załuski, the Vatican’s new Apostolic Nuncio, stepped off the ferry at the Valletta Waterfront, marking the beginning of his diplomatic mission in our sunny isles.
Who is Mgr Wojciech Załuski?
Hailing from Poland, Mgr Załuski is no stranger to diplomatic life. With a career spanning over two decades in the Vatican’s diplomatic service, he has served in various capacities, most recently as the Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine. Now, he brings his wealth of experience to Malta, replacing Archbishop Alberto Perlo, who served as Apostolic Nuncio from 2016 to 2021.
Born in 1962, Mgr Załuski was ordained a priest in 1987 and later joined the Vatican’s diplomatic service in 1995. He has served in various embassies, including those in South Africa, the United States, and the United Nations. His appointment to Malta was announced by Pope Francis in late 2021, and his arrival was highly anticipated by the local Catholic community.
What Does an Apostolic Nuncio Do?
An Apostolic Nuncio, or Papal Nuncio, is a diplomatic representative of the Holy See to a particular country or international organization. In Malta, Mgr Załuski will serve as the official link between the Vatican and the local Catholic Church, as well as the Maltese government.
His role involves promoting and fostering relations between the Holy See and Malta, representing the Vatican’s interests, and providing spiritual guidance and support to the local Catholic community. He will also play a crucial role in coordinating the Vatican’s humanitarian and charitable efforts on the island.
What’s on the Agenda for Mgr Załuski?
Mgr Załuski’s arrival coincides with a busy period for the Maltese Catholic Church. With Easter around the corner, he will be involved in various religious celebrations and ceremonies. Beyond the immediate festive season, his calendar is likely to include meetings with local clergy, visits to parishes and institutions, and high-level discussions with government officials.
One event that’s already on the horizon is the upcoming visit of Pope Francis to Malta in April. As the Apostolic Nuncio, Mgr Załuski will play a pivotal role in coordinating the logistics and preparations for this significant event.
In his own words, Mgr Załuski expressed his excitement about his new mission: “I am grateful for the trust that the Holy Father has placed in me and I look forward to serving the Catholic community in Malta and working with the local authorities to strengthen the bonds between our two nations.”
