New Apostolic Nuncio Mgr Wojciech Załuski Arrives in Malta: A Warm Welcome and a New Era
As the sun cast a golden glow over the tarmac at Malta International Airport yesterday, a man of significant influence stepped onto our shores. Mgr Wojciech Załuski, the new Apostolic Nuncio to Malta, arrived to a warm welcome, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the Catholic Church’s diplomatic mission on our islands.
Who is Mgr Wojciech Załuski?
Born in 1966 in Poland, Mgr Załuski brings a wealth of diplomatic and ecclesiastical experience to his new role. He has served as the Secretary of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches and the Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine, among other positions. His appointment was announced by Pope Francis in June, succeeding Archbishop Alberto Bottari de Castello.
A Warm Welcome at the Airport
Yesterday’s arrival was a testament to the warm relations between the Maltese and the Holy See. Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna, the Archbishop of Malta, was among those who greeted Mgr Załuski at the airport. The new Nuncio was also welcomed by the Secretary General of the Maltese Episcopal Conference, Fr. Charlo Bonnici, and other dignitaries.
“It was a pleasure to welcome Mgr Załuski to Malta,” said Fr. Bonnici. “We look forward to working together and continuing the strong bond between the Maltese Church and the Holy See.”
Setting Up Shop in Floriana
Mgr Załuski will be based at the Apostolic Nunciature in Floriana, a historic building that has housed the Holy See’s diplomatic mission to Malta since 1964. The Nunciature, located on Archbishop Street, is a familiar sight to locals, standing as a symbol of the deep-rooted ties between Malta and the Vatican.
“Floriana is a beautiful city, and I’m grateful to be serving here,” said Mgr Załuski. “I look forward to getting to know the Maltese people and contributing to the life of the Church on these islands.”
: A New Era of Cooperation
Mgr Załuski’s arrival coincides with a period of significant change and growth in the Maltese Church. With several major projects underway, including the restoration of historic churches and the development of new pastoral initiatives, his diplomatic skills and ecclesiastical experience will be invaluable.
As he begins his mission, Mgr Załuski has a clear vision for his role. “I am here to serve the Church in Malta,” he said. “My task is to foster cooperation and understanding between the Maltese Church and the Holy See, and to support the work of Archbishop Scicluna and the local bishops.”
With his arrival, a new era in the diplomatic history of the Maltese Church begins. As Mgr Załuski settles into his new role, one thing is clear: the future looks bright for the Church in Malta, with a new Nuncio at the helm, ready to navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
